  • How do you choose servos?

OK so I'm thinking ahead to getting my Phoenixtech 700e once Andy gets the nod on the test flight the pre-production one is getting.

I'm going electric, made that desicion now so now I'm on to choosing the electronics, servo research now.

I'll be using MKS servos but there's a huge range of different types.

Now I'm really more interested in F3C style controlled flying right now ( I'll deal with this stick wanging stuff in the future I'm sure ) and I was told to go with the DS660A servos because they are more F3C orientated.

But why is one servo better for F3C over another, and why would something else be better for 3D?

At the minute it probably doesn't matter what I get as my 'flying' is so basic anyway mostly hovering, so I could get away with pretty much anything I guess. But I like to understand this stuff

    Hi Pete,
I would think for F3C you require a servo with precise centering, hhere as for 3D grunt plus speed, but let the big boy's come along and explain better,as I could be wrong.

        Thats it.

3D servos are quicker whereas F3C servos are not needed to be as quick but F3C servos have more torque than the 3D servos

Take a look at Futaba BLS252 (F3C servo) and the BLS 253 (3D servo) for a quick comparison

But tbh I have used both and cant tell no difference at my level between them

I go to www.google.com and type in "ALIGN DS610 Servo"

                  Like so:

                  Click me

In all seriousness, I go off speed and torque ratings, without breaking the bank. I tend to favour the 610s as they are good value for money. For cyclics, you need torque over speed, whereas tail it's the opposite.

TBH Harry's right here, the 610s are a very good servo for 3D and F3C

What I'm hearing is that people just stick with what they know, and don't specifically pick servos other than picking the fastest and highest torque in the budget they have. But what I mean is how do you pick between which of the two you want?

The DS660A have much higher torque, but less speed, than others, or even the Aligns.

                        Dead band: 0.001ms (Default)

I got the Align Servos in my 600 as part of the combo but if i was going to buy servo's now i would porbably just take the recommendations of the 3D pilots in our club (there is a few ) and get them.
