Was running my Redline today with the needle out two full turns, Opti fuel 30%. when I landed, the back plate was piping hot. I've lost the manual and can't remember what the standard setting ae for the carb. Any idas on why it's so hot??

Even though you were well out on the top needle, where is it on the mixture screw and if you were sport flying and not using the top end you could be running on the lean side.

If you've not tweaked the needles too much since you last flew when it was ok, I'd be looking at the fuel tubing and filters in the system to make sure it's all working as expected.

Sorry, I don't recall base settings!
        Cheers,

Factory settings are main needle 3 turns out....mixture screw head to be flush with the carb body
I have uploaded the manual http://www.rcheliaddict.co.uk/local_...&catid=5&id=51
          Cheers

I'll clarify, the main needle sounds fine but if it's still hot ten it has to be the mixture screw which should be level with the surface of the carb body. I am just over 2 turns out with the mixture needle at factory (ish). Or as Rob suggests, tubing and filters.

Possibly too lean on the 3rd needle, they are known to move in use if not loctited in.

you may need to shim it for 30 % nitro, otherwise the ignition time may be too early.
for the 53 it is AFAIK officially recommended, and I know somebody for whom it solved the problem.
