  • Is it worth standardising gyros across the fleet?

    By fleet I mean 2

    I have a 450 with a Futaba GY520 on, and a 500 with a Spartan DS760 on.

I know these are both fantastic Gyros and to be honest I am doing nothing that is even slightly stressing either of them, but..

Is it worth swapping one out for the other and having the same brand for the both (and sticking that way for future heli's?)

Pretty much the only reason I am thinking this way is because it should not cost me much, the GY520 is almost new and what I could get for it should pretty much get me a Quark at the new 30% off prices, or even a straightish swap for a used one.

Is it worth doing or am I just being anal? Should I just realise I am lucky to have 2 top gyro's that are too much for my ability anyway and get back in my box?

Rants, advice and finger poking welcome

As a beginner, I've never regretted putting gyros (DS760s) and ESCs (Castle Creations) on my helis that are far more capable than I am.

Kit like these that's easy to set up, and just works lets me attend to the all the other things that I can mess up. Like flying...

I think you're being anal and should just stick with both gyros as neither of them are giving you any trouble and both work as well as each other.

One advantage of sticking with the same stuff is that any setup tools are common across them and you only have to remember how to set up the gyro from one mannufacturer.

Disadvantage is that you might miss out on a better performing gyro or get board with not having a different toy to play with

I went for Spartan across all my fleet (with a new quark turning up soon) so I just have one interface and one way to set up to worry about.

It was a close call, it was nearly all SolidG but the mini-G didnt come out in time so I swapped to the Spartan.

I run CSM SL720s on all my big helis and Align GP750s on the small ones.. As Jason mentioned.. I have one interface for the gyros and you learn the setup once..

I used to run different Futaba gyros but they differed in setup (240, 401 and 502)..

The Aligns do a great job on the little electrics, they are rock solid and and you just plug n play..

By all means migrate towards commonality as the opportunity arises, but I struggle to see the point is changing good kit like that on a whim.

Cheers for the comments guys, probably the slap I needed

Like you say, don't really need to swap the GY520 out of the 450, it is just being anal.

I was thinking about commonality between interfaces and similarity in set ups but like you say, is it worth it when what I have works just fine?
