This is exactly what mine did. Turned out to be a faulty short lead. The only other thing I spotted is that I originally had the gyro set for the 450/250 (status Red when on delay setting). Mt tail was completely uncontrollable, no matter what setting you were in (rate or heading hold)
I reset this, then went throught the whole set up again. Made sure the tail was perfectly centered, no funny offsets. Swapped to the longer lead, put some epoxy externally on both ends of the leads to make sure nothing can come out (don't have a hot glue gun).
My next flight was perfect.
I don't think the tail being slightly off center will cause this, personally I think you have a fault somewhere.

My lead did have a dodgy pin one end. I pulled out the dodgy pin, found it to be bent so straightened it and reinserted it into the connector. That was a week ago or so, i had better
re-check the connections. Thanks Si, i'll also go through the tail setup again. I'm sure that before i flew the likes of vbar on permanent HH tails, that when setting up the tail you could 'fly' it on the rudder stick if it wasn't setup properly - today this really was pretty violent to any stick input.
Thanks all
Scared the sh*t out of me on my first flight. Was not expecting anything, just thought it would jump into the hover. I had two attempts before I took it home to have another look, but like you say, there was no control over the tail. At one point the unit was not repsonding, but after switching it off and on everything came back normal....this is when I knew something was not right.
After speaking with the chap I bought mine from, and reading a few forum posts, there seemed to be some people with faulty leads (the shorter one). Not had a problem with mine since.
Hope it all goes well.
Cheers, Simon

OK, reset up the tail last night, everything correct. Retested the gyro dir and sense at the field all ok, spooled up light on its skids and no tail control again (closer inspection showed rudder worked but if you swung the tail in rate or HH mode the gyro did not react).
Powered off rxer and back on again - gyro working correctly again.
I can only assume this is a dodgy lead between sensor and control unit. I have a replacement on its way, so i guess the one i repaired still has a fault somewhere. Gonna get the test meter out and check continuity of the cable while wiggling it about.
I had a similar tail wag problem yesterday which turned out to be a sticky tail slider. With a new slider in place it is perfect...just a suggestion..
Good luck.
Thanks, for the advice but it's nice and free. I think the biggest indicator so far of my problem is after the first spool up and the mad tail to then discover the tail gyro had stopped responding until i cycled the power.
