  • Should my Gyro do this?

On my Swift I have a CSM HLG200 Heading lock Gyro and a Hi-Tec HS-5925MG digital on the tail.

Whenever spooling up, the heli tries to rotate with no apparent Gyro correction apparent.
A quick stab of rudder to bring it back and it stays put thereon, and is fine in the air.
Should I adjust the mechanical linkage so that it doesnt rotate on the ground ( Grass ) or what??? As I said, all is fine in the air and I just wondered if this is how things are meant to happen on spoolup.
Surely if it was out mechanically this would be obvious in the air?

    Dunno!
    Cheers,

    Gazza

That one is HH only, I have one on the Eco8, when spooling up I move the rudder side to side and then centre it, it takes off fine then, well just a small correction needed. remember, in HH the unit will hunt and go one way if left sitting as the tail is dead, the gyro can't move it until it is up !

      Martin,

      I meant HH!! Long day..
I'm shocked the suggestion wasnt the usual 'Get a 401'
A 401 is in the pipeline actually, do you rate the CSM then?
      Cheers,

I have found the 200 fine, my friend still flies his Logo 14 on one ! The club I am with are very anti CSM and Pro 401 to 611's but I have the 420 micros and just one 200 and they just work ! My next will be a 611. Try that on spoolup next time, on the 401 you need to recenter after carrying the heli to the flight line before take off or switch it to std rate mode then back to HH.

I always carry out in normal rate mode. I then spool up to and before it
gets light on the skids flick to H.H works with 401,601 and my CSM sl560
          which is okay.

I like CSM but have found the 401 10x easier to setup.

I'd even swap the 601 with digi servo for a 401 and 9254 for my gasser
if I knew it could hold the gasser tail well. 601 to fiddly for me I hate fiddling.

Absolutely, not having gain adjustment on the TX is a royal pain!
I fitted & set up the electronics in my mates Swift, which has a 401 and I then realised what all the fuss was about! Mighty impressed.

Yes Midlands put me onto my first 420 micro with the T rex 450XL I then bought 2nd hand one for the Eco and another eco8 came already with the 200. I can't get the GWS PG01 (think that correct or 03) to work well...... they are bad or it is me ! 401 for £80 can't go wrong !

Oh the CSM 560 you can adjust the gain on the tranny

Its the rest of the setup i don't like flicking switch everytime etc although this
means there is no way the tail will bind at all. I get lost in the middle of it all

At the Nats A new member with a Raptor 30 with a GWS gyro which I struggled to
hold the tail and hold the cycil to trim dam thing was a nightmare. I pointed him
to Fast Lads and he got the 401 with 9254. All I have to do now is set it up this
                weekend.

When you switch the heli on, the gyro sets itself up and finds its center.

Then you carry it out to the take-off point and I bet you've rotated it through 90 degrees or more before you actually lift off the ground. So, the gyro is attempting to get back to the position where you turned it on.

The answer is - when the heli is sitting out there on the launch pad ready to go, wiggle the rudder a few times so that the gyro locates its new heading.

                    Yep, as above.

I too have a CSM HL200 so we are not all 401 fanatics

                      Cheers fellas,

                      Much appreciated.
Just had it out hovering around the garden and the tail is kicking around 45-90 degs all on it's own now and then...Bit scary!!
Think I might need to up the gain a little but its so difficult to get it just right as the adjuster screw is quite tight.

I've already brought the control rod in a hole or three on the servo arm, as the gain needed to be set very low to stop it wagging.
Maybe it needs to be brought in again, but that would leave it only 10mm from the centre spline and on the first hole.

Didn't have this with my friends 401...Hmmmm...!
                      Cheers,

                      Gazza

I assume you have it mounted on the CSM supplied gyro mount pad?

If not, this can cause problems.

Sounds like it is suffering from a serious glitch or that there is something physically wrong with the Gyro.

Have you contacted CSM for some advise? I gather they offer a gyro check service? Might be worth it if you feel unhappy with it possibly bringing your model down.

                            Cheers

I'll percivere with the gain for a little while at safe height and see what I get first!
