If you are unlucky enough to lose the tail it's best to hit hold as soon as you realise. It is possible to bring the heli down in one piece sometimes.
I did try to fight it but realised pretty quickly that tail authority was completely gone. My thought was 'as long as its in the air it aint broken!'

It was pretty high up so as soon as it was low enough I hit hold.

Live and learn I guess mate!

a "4.8v" servo running on a lipo/lion with a regulator set to 6v does not need a step down its the same as a fully charged 4.8v nicad/nimh

Ade (in the summer) if I run my 9254 tail servo on my 500 at 6V it gets really quite warm after a few flights. At 5V it doesn't change temperature. I could let it cool down after each flight though rather than changing bettery in under 2 mins and taking off again though!

While it can definately be done, it can't be good for the servo in my opinion.

I guess the simple answer is if you are worried about it run at lower voltage don't mix and match adding dodgy electronics or extra links into your setup

9254's are not the most robust servo's available for the tail at the best of times so try something else would be my idea

Higher voltage is always going to have an effect on servo life whether it's on your tail, throttle or cyclic, the same goes for Rx/ESC/Gyro. You could always run everything at the lowest voltage possible short of browning out but then that's also a risk. You just have to make a choice, running a servo at 4.8-5.1v regulated, with a 4.8v Rx pack or on regulated 6.0v? I'll stick with 6.0v as it's simpler, faster and the actual MTBF is probably not a lot different

Another thing I'm pretty sure of is that we should probably really be thinking about tail servos as a service item after so many tanks, packs, hours etc. Rather than just assuming they are fit and forget till one actually goes belly up...maybe the same should be for cyclics as well? Especially now we are pushing them even harder at higher voltages?

I am getting worried now as I have a 9254 on my 600NSP tail. Should I change it?

If you hit the hold when the tail has gone, it takes all the power out of it and tends to slow if not stop the spin anyway, had my tail on my super pro go inverted about 6 foot off the ground, hit the hold flipped and landed it in one piece.

REally sorry to hear about your 700, ive never trusted those stepdowns. and have refused to use them heard of too many going wrong. I like to keep things simple wiring and joints to a minimum.
              All the best
              Tony.

It will be fine. I have one on my 600. Just remember they can go wrong so if any odd behaviour occurs land and investigate right away.

Thanks Tony. All back together again and test flown so just the financial aspect of the crash for me to stomach now!!!!!

I would have hit hold right away if the heli was lower James but I was pretty high up and supposed I hoped tail control would return (not knowing about the stepdown!).

The thing was just out of control and whipping the tail all over the place as there was no power to the servo whatsoever.

Anyway, no stepdown now and the heli is back in the air! :-)
