  • Stepdown cost me my 700

Well, my shiny new 700 is no longer new. Second tank today I lost complete tail control. Fought it for what seemed an age and eventually had to hit hold to see my pride and joy hit the dirt. I'm a placid guy but I was furious. Anyway, only just got the courage to strip it down to see the consequences and find the fault. The red positive wire had seperated on the Align stepdown.

Now, I'm loathed to use one of these again. I have read posts stating a stepdown is really only required when running nicads as fully charged one can push 7v? Is anyone out there running a 611/9256 without the stepdown? I also use the Align 2-in-1 with no issues.

I'm gutted guys but the damage isnt too bad: Canopy, Undercarriage/skids, blades. My new Hatori is a bit dinged but mainly cosmetic.

    Cheers
    Pete

Gutted for you Pete. I can imagine how you feel, I have seen one or two posts about this over the last year. Have a look on helifreak.

        Gutted Mate.

I have started using Hitec 6965`s on the tail that used to be on my cyclics.

They take the 6v fine and are very fast with far more torque than any of the Futaba tail servos.

I have had one on my 700 from new and now my 600E and they are fine with no stepdown.

yep step downs are pointless (see my previous rants).

a "4.8v" servo running on a lipo/lion with a regulator set to 6v does not need a step down its the same as a fully charged 4.8v nicad/nimh

              Oh Sh**e

Feel for you. Especially a 700!!.

When you look at all the electronics & connections in a heli I suppose 'less the better' looks sensible.

Hope it's back in the air soon.

I've been using a 9256 on my 500 for ages at 6.0v out of my Herc BEC no worries. As i've used 9254's on tails and throttle at 6.0v no problem in the past

Just ignore the 6.0v nay sayers they talketh gimmerish **** stained tosh from the Olde Worlde and just feed the 4.8v vs 6v bullshit and so it propogates

Cheers guys. I'll hopefully get the bits over the next few days and get it sorted.

I think I'll ditch the stepdown all together though. The align reg puts out 5.8v so realistically, as Ade says, the servo should be fine.

Still gutted though!!!! Not even a dumb thumb!!!

Always at it's worst when it's not user input...hmmm should that be user wrong input

No point mincing my words, it's been said enough times but still it gets posted and reposted. To be honest it is the single most annoying bit of misinformation that still keeps being given out

I'm used to calling a spade a spade anyway

Made me laugh too David but was exactly what I needed to hear.

                          Thanks Phil.

I am gutted knowing that a £4 wire cost me my new bird Phil, but at least it isnt the gyro/servo at fault which is what I originally thought!

                            Bright side and all that!

No worries Pete but the "others" will be along in a minute trying to lure you back to the "dark ways"

To be fair it's a trade of, it always will be. The higher the voltage you run any electronics at the shorter their life but the difference between 4.8v NiCd and a 6.0v regulated supply is neither here nor there
