Thanks to all those who've posted on this competition class servo. It seems to need three trim settings.
1) Trim for rate mode. If you are patient this can be set to zero.
2) Trim for heading hold when on ground. This must produce a pulse width of 1520 micro seconds which is centre trim on my spectrum. You can find this trim on other txs by starting with centre and then watching the tail rotor and if it moves change the trim the other way until the movement stops.
3) Trim for flying. When in the air my gyro needs one to two click of right trim, depending on temperature and how it feels on the day.
I have to reposition the heli quite often and it often lands pointing in a different direction to the one I need for takeoff.
To stop the gyro turning rapidly on takeoff.
As soon as it lands I switch into rate mode, then I reposition the heli for takeoff, set the trim to zero, switch into heading mode, takeoff and put in two clicks of right trim to stop the tail moving.
I think this agrees with everybody elses comments. For initial flights as a beginner rate mode is predictable. When I first managed about ten seconds I found hold mode was better, but that was beginners luck. After a few exciting takeoffs I realised that rate mode was at least predictable. I now think that hold mode is better but you do have to be able to change trim in flight.
