  • Servo choice ....

hi guys i'm getting ready to look for some servos for the Raptor 90 SE i bought and i thought i would ask what servos would do the job ? i went overboard the last time and spent over 500 on servos for my Raptor 50 but this time i will be looking to buy something cheaper or even second hand ... i've been reading a lot about servos and if i can i would like HV servos then i wouldn't need to step the voltage down when using a Lipo battery ....

i don't really know if i need tougher servos for the 90 compared to the 50 so i need a bit of help from someone who knows ... thanks guys ....

You would be fine with a set of second hand align 610's on the cyclic. Just use an LiFe battery rather than a Lipo and then you can avoid a regulator in the same way.

You are not going to need crazy powerful servos on a raptor

For the servos, you just need a 2S battery, somewhere between 2000 and 4000 mAh

You will have to check on the capacity you have taken out of it per flight (so do 2 or 3 flights, and see how much you have to put back in in mAh and then work out how many flights to take yourself down to 40% capacity). This will probably be about 4 or 5 flights, but depends on style and servo current drain.

I used to get 6 out of my knight 3D on a 2S 3000mAh LiFe as a receiver pack and never ended up going below 50% capacity.

I have 2 Raptors and use these life batteries.....
            A123 Battery Pack 2 Series 2500mAh
I also use the same battery on a Synergy E7se, They normally use around 200-220mah per flight..
The E7se is using MKS servos and the 2 Raptors are using Align servos..

Is it flybarred still or converted to flybarless?

With a FBL heli servo speed is more important because the aileron and elevator servos are having to do the work that the flybar would have done.

Both Electric, a stretch e720 to 753 blades and a e820, Just finished charging the E7se life pack and that took 439mAh for 3 flights.
With your Raptor being nitro you have a extra servo to take into account and also if you have onboard glow...

I still have a few flybarred models as well and no intention of changing them (Robbe Futura SE, Dyna-X and Knight 3D).

If the 90 SE is mechanical mixing like the 50/60/90V2 then what you could do is use 610s on the aileron and elevator and then get something fast with lots of torque for the collective and then a 610 or 620 on the throttle. Some older tail servos are not capable of handling 6 volts so for example the Futaba 9254 or JR 8900 need to stay closer to 5 volts.

nice ... i have a Raptor 30 with the Align 2in1 and its flawless on Lipo so i don't know if i should go the same route with the 90 ....

i still have a bls 451 and a ds 620 in their boxes from a few years ago and the 90 came with a Futaba S 9254 on the tail so i just need 2 more servos if i use the S9254 but its 4.8 and id rather have 6v ....

I am not a stick banger, just big air. So although 2 sets of the servos are rated at 8.4v i find that i can not tell the difference at 6.6v. What i like about life packs is that i can fully charge them when i come
home from a fly and not worry about them being left on the heli like that.
