  • Futaba gy401 and matching servo loss of tail control?

    Hiya guys,
    Was just wondering
rappy 30 has been pucka for awhile now but today sadly the tail push rod came loose from the servo wich ended in a mad uncontrallable spin which luckily ( phewweee) i mananged to fluke a landing out of.
so i lost the servo horn screw to attach the push rod but had to use the very outer hole on my horn.
3 times i had a tail kick?, tail would spin in 1 way or the other ( not sure ) for about a turn maybe less but while this glitch was happening i had no tail control at all ( no response, dead) but then gyro would kick in again after a second.

only thing i changed was moving the tail ciontrol rod onto the outer most hole on my servo arm, would this cause my problem ??
    ta
will try next flight with the same setup as before but am very scared now of this happening again as i was lucky twice

using rappy 30 and futaba gy401 with matching servo

I can't fully work out what your problem is from, "so i lost the servo horn screw to attach the push rod but had to use the very outer hole on my horn".

If however I get the last part correctly then I would suspect there is a dead spot on the servo. By way of example say you are hovering side on to the wind and there is a gust. The gyro now needs to issue a command to stop the helicopter from turning. If the servo has now moved to the dead spot the helicopter will then continue to turn. The gyro will issue a counter command but nothing will happen immediately. Then maybe through vibration in the air frame the servo starts to move but now in the opposite direction and you see this as the tail kicking because of the speed with which the servo moves.

I have had a S9254 go bad in this way. I spent a long time on the bench giving full left and right commands while putting a load on the servo. All of a sudden it stopped responding. Then it started working again but then the fault became more solid.

lol, sory dude, yes i lost the screw from the servo horn but had another screw that would fit any of the other holes in the horn , so used that screw but couldnt put it back in the same hole , ( oh had a beer too ), sen better more understandable posts ).

May be counting towards my problem, the tail servo push rod coming from the tail servo in the front of helicopter was no longer moving around freely, was very very stiff trying to move the tail by hand, just off to get a tail boom mount for the servo now.

That should run silky smooth m8... that could be your problem. Get a carbon rod and boom mount kit. Far easier to setup and silky smooth. Im using the 3rd hole out on the futaba cross shaped arms. Also... you did setup your limits on the top of the gyro?
          Cheers

Got the quick uk tail mounting kit, shame i have to bugger around with the boom though, may take the tail off and slide it down, oh i hate belts .
The s3524 servo must of been getting really hot and bothered with the control rod being as stiff as it was ( mega stiff ).
I like the looks of the carbon rod, should be nice and direct.
Yes i had set the pots on the gyro before i moved the position to the outer hole but didnt do it afterwards, thats when the strange problem first happened.
I wil let you guys know asap what the outcome is.
            Thanks for your help guys.

Had 3 full tanks of fun yesterday, not 1 tail glitch at all so it must of been the tail servo rod running through the body that was stiff which must of caused the problem, lucky i didnt burn the servo out.

Just if you didnt set the limits after you moved to the outer hole on the servo arm then it would have been binding. Hence causing your problem.
