  • HK401B gyro settings ?

As titled, got me one of these doohickies. The manual isn't really very helpful, although I've used a Futaba 401 before, also a couple of align 750s which was excellent and easy to set up, the HK one ain't so fine. I'm assuming I'm doing it wrong ( Yes I know, buying it in the first place ! But this part of a winter experiment to try it on the cheap with a HK 450 FB job, bit of fun and no great loss if it all goes tits up )
With that in mind does anyone have previous with one and can tell me what are the gain and delay settings to start with and where to go from there ? The manual, all in Chinglish, advises to set delay and limits at zero and "vibrate" the heli left / right and correct accordingly. Hmm not sure about that as any attempt to hover in HH gives very odd performance, nil rudder one input followed by extreme response the next, with the occasional snap back to tail in, but not every time.
As the kit was a lot better than some say, very few problems, it'd be nice to get some airtime with it if and when weather permits.
Be grateful for any help folks.
    Trex 450 SEV2.
Trex 450 SEV2, hack, freeby, but getting expensive. Binned the bu**er !
    Trex 550 V2. Adrenalin ( brown kind )
mCPX, better than a Phoenix anyday.
    Several planks, gathering dust.

Brains and thumbs work okay, but not at the same time.

My experience with these (from some years ago) was that the quality control varies greatly. So some of them worked and some didn't but they never worked as well as a legit Futaba GY401.

It would be setup pretty much like a Futaba 401, set the travel range and gyro sense, keep raising the gain till you get a fast wag and then back it down a few ticks. The delay setting (if memory serves) was for slower servos, lower delay for fast servos - damn it's been so long I don't remember exactly! )

I would bin it dude. You could get a cheap 401 or 750 that would be light years ahead.

        +1 on binning it.
The first incarnation of this gyro wasn't bad but the later revised (different, cheaper sensors) version was just dreadful.
As this type of gyro tends to be a thing of the past the Align 750's are as cheap as chips. try ebay or put out a wanted on here.

Thanks for the replies, though "bin it" wasn't in my wish list. Got one gonna use it or at least have a go !
So special ta to trill That was a bit encouraging. I should've added that I'm using a DX 7S, and the last I can remember was the gain was set on the t/x at around 60 % HH and -5% rates.
Probably end up with one of my align 750s instead. But that cost more than the HK450, hence the want to give the hobby king one a shot.
          Regards Cagey.

Cagey, I see that you have been a member on here for quite some time, longer than I have. You should, by now, have learned the maxim, "buy cheap, buy twice".
I am not saying, necessarily, that the HK item is no good but I am sure that you would be better off buying a decent gyro second hand. Indeed I have a spare Align GP780 that worked perfectly until I changed to flybarless.
If you want it, pm me your address and I will send it to you. I also have the esc that came as standard on the Align 450, if anyone wants it I am giving that away also.

Hi Mike, Thank you for your generous offer, it's very gratifying to see we have members here who are of the old school. Not being one to look a gift horse in the mouth ( whatever that means ) However I am still determined to get that cheapo HK450 / Hk401, old motor ESC combo from an exTrex plus old spare Hitech servos in the air. I do have a spare 750 already, but that's reserved for a complete rebuild of my Trex 450 SEV2 for next years flying.
This HK 450 caper is just a bit of fun as a winter project to see if doing it on the cheap is achieveable and no great loss if it all goes tits up. It certainly wont set a trend that's for sure and more than likely will serve to confirm the "buy cheap, buy twice" adage, I'm familiar with that one ! Just a stubborn old goat I guess, But I will say that one of our club members had a couple of these cheap set ups and believe me they flew very well indeed, to be honest indistinguishable from the Align ones. Again, many thanks for the kind offer
