  • Gyro problems

    Alright guys,

I know most of you are thinking what is a gyro lol seen as though most of you are flybarless now. But I'm having major issues with my gyro. It's an on going thing now that I have just lost patience with. Its an Align GP780 and yes I know they are hit and miss gyros and yes I know many people have had problems with them in the past and yes I know they aint the best ones out there.

The problem is, I bought a Trex 450 combo kit from FastLads that came with all the electronics, gyro etc... I built the heli some time ago now and I test flew it and the gyro was just horrible. After spending so much time trying to fix the tail problems that I was having, but to no evail I contacted FastLads who asked me to send the gyro back to them and in turn they sent it away to Robbe. The gyro was away for nearly two months which I thought was taking the p*** to be honest. So after numerous calls to Fastlads and Robbe, I eventually got the gyro back with a note stating that 'There was nothing wrong with it' Professionally written out on a scrappy 'post it note'

Now the gyro sat for some time at my home untouched as I was so busy with working away and studying, that I had no time for the hobby. So now that I have found myself with a bit of free time I thought that I'd have a go at trying to get this thing working

So here we go again, nothing but problems with this gyro. But oh wait a minute....I was told that it had been tested at Robbe and that it was fine lol! What a load of old crap! I energised my tx and then the heli and I just sat it on the bench now and I didn't touch it for a good five minutes, The next thing the tail servo just moved fully to one extent with no input from myslef. Also sometimes when I energise the heli the tail servo just wont work when the gyro is in HH. But when I flick it into rate mode it then moves fine. But then when I disconnect the battery and power down, I do this a couple of times and then the tail servo will move in HH mode when I operate the rudder stick but as soon as I let go of the rudder stick it whips straight to one extent of the servo.

Now I feel like I have just been totally fobbed off with this gyro. Firstly I flew my heli once with it on and I had to send it away, FastLads had it and then sent it onto Robbe without notifying myself. So numerous calls later and nobody knew who had my gyro......Strange that. One place was telling me that the other place had it and vice versa. I was just getting passed pillar to post and messed about. So I eventually got it back after as I said previously 2 months it had taken! And with a sh*tty little note saying that it was fine. But the thing is, it isn't fine.

So this leads me now to wondering if anyone is selling a decent gyro as I know you are mostly all fbl now so someone must have one kicking about thats in good order for a good price? I am just going to have to accept that I have come to a loss with this stupid gyro and £80 down through no fault of my own and down to bad customer service.

    Cheers,
    Grant.

A gyro can be ok and yet still not work. Our equipment doesn't have proper specs that makes sure that everything works with everything else. You may for instance have a gyro that gives a low output pulse and a servo that needs a higher output pulse than the gyro provides. I had this problem with one gyro and servo. The gyro output was too low and it only needed a pulse cleaner to sort it out. That's just one example of course, but some investigation from someone with a scope might throw some light on your problem. HobbyKing sell the pulse cleaner for a few pounds, so it is a well known problem.

Best option Grant is to ditch the Align gyro and get yourself a Spartan Quark for around the £50.00 mark. Lovely little gyro, dead easy to set up and works every time. I now have these on my Gaui 200's, Gaui 550 and the Mini Titan and they have transformed the tails on these heli's.

Don - bought one last week brand new off E bay direct from Spartan and I think it was £48.00 posted but may be possible to better that if you look around. I wanted on quick as the none too good Align RCE600 on my Gaui 550 went u/s and I did not want to waste a reasonable flying weekend!!

Sorry Don I miss understood your response and used ones are normally around the £35 - £40 mark. Just had a quick look on E bay and the new ones from Spartan have gone up to nearly £60.00 new now.

Thank you everyone for your input, as I gathered it's probably best to ditch the GP780. I will post a video of me hitting it with a hammer if there's any interest lol!

Thanks Don, I have spoke with Forza and I'm going to purchase the gyro from him as it is compatible with my Align Ds420 tail servo aswell and it's at a good price!

I am wanting to get a fbl heli at some point in the future but I still want to own a fbl heli so this way I will have one of each and I would like to fly them back to back some day to see what the comparison is like

So hopefully I will be able to add to this thread by the weekend and it will be positive of me having a better tail setup on my heli I can't wait! I havn't flown a rc heli for 4 years! :0 after I bought this 450 I flew it once and it's just been sat doing nothing ever since. Life just seemed to have taken over for the past few years and I have never gotten chance to get out with my models.

                Thanks again guys,
                Grant.

Think a poll may be needed in order to see what is the best way that people suggest to put this gyro to rest pmsl!
