  • Servo eater

So I get my TRex clone and set it up and flew it, crashed it rebuilt it etc, you know the rest
Its now flying nicely, but......its eating servos!
I run one battery through it, fit a second one and the tail rotor control doesn’t work. Yes, no rudder. The Gyro is steady blue, but I have no life in the tail. I checked the servo and it is possible to turn the arm - ie there is no power to it.
I tried going into setup and reinitialising the gyro, but no change.
I got a servo tester, plugged it in and .... nothing. So I swore a bit and got a new servo, fitted it and ran another 2 batteries through it.
    And its gone again
Radio is a Turnigy, servos are Tower Pro MG930, gyro is Assan GA250

    Has anyone any suggestions?
    Thanks, Alan

    get some decent servos!!

Sorry to say this bud but them servos are only fit for one thing and thats the bin! And I definately wouldnt fly a heli, that is capable of killing people with em!!

For cyclic you want something like Hi-tec HS-65mg Tough, dependable and will last years, and for the tail something like Align DS425m A nice fast servo is what you need for tail use

General rule of thumb is something strong and reasonably quick for cyclics and something blisteringly quick for tail, because with modern gyros they need decent servos to keep up with how fast they can send corrective signals to them.
Some say my left nipple is the shape of a Raptor canopy.......... And that for fun I chase sheep in wellies 3 sizes too big. All I know is I am 3D Clod

As explained above its true...I had rubbish stock ace servos which stripped in couple of hours after I tried flying my mini titan...later I changed to hitec hs65 mg and since then I survived 4 crashes ...they are quiet strong....for the tail I use align ds410 and they also have survived a big crash, just had to change the outer cover once.....and you can easily get them from fastlads or midland helicopter .....good investment.

        cheers.

You may have the assan gyro on the wrong servo frequency setting and the servos don't like it

Have to disagree with Kev a bit on this, I have a 450 which is my holiday beater, and this has run on MG90s and a Assan 250 for years without issue.

If its just the tail servo dying:-

            a) binding, is the tail mechanism smooth, you could be burning out a weak servo if it isnt.
            b) I would check voltages
            c) pulse width selected.

If memory serves the Assan was a bit of a pain to setup initially. I would consider though buying an Align 520 servo for the tail, relatively cheap and nice and strong.

+1 in the Hi-tec Hs65 the ones in my 450pro I got 4 years ago and where first fitted to my Blade 400 then they went in the Beam e4 and now my 450pro
You will do the odd gear set and a big smash but a solid great servo

Thanks guys, I'll check the pulse width. I did wonder about the Gyro. just have to get some servos!

If you do decide to change your gyro aswell keep your eyes out for a second hand Spartan ds760 or Quark. You can pick em up for £20-£30 nowadays, and why anyone would get another gyro over them is beyond me!!

                      Well Guys,
                      I will get better servos.
I checked the initial setting for the gyro. it was flashing 5 red which doesn't tell me anything as the "Manual" only shows 4 reds. so I reset it to 1 flash. it is strange how it goes out of adjustment. I have fitted a "trial" servo and its working perfectly for the moment, so it must have been the gyro maladjustment like was suggested.
I'll run a couple more batteries through it and see how it goes. I'll stay in ground-effect!!
                      Thanks again,
                      Alan
