How would you go about activating hh on the dx8, gear is gyro and I've done that on my end points but it still flashes, I haven't turned on gyro in tx yet would it clash if i did?, the thing is I had little control or hh when I last set it up?

It's been a while since I even looked at a gyro but you need to be above 50% gain for HH

From memory I thought it ment the gyro hadnt set if heading hold was selected but the led was still flashing. Years ago I used to have this problem with a mini Titan because the Rx would take a bit longer to boot than the gyro did, so it would think there was no Rx signal at boot up.

Right got solid now, enabled gyro... I think I had incorrect switch allocation, values in gyro are 70 HH and 49 in rate mode to start off with but it doesn't flash in rate mode even when I go lower, I'll give it ago now thanks.

I used to use lots of GY401s (DX7) and I usually use the dedicated gyro mode and always run them in HH. Most of mine seemed to run around the 80% range but that number may be meaningless on the DX8. I still have a couple 401s and they always worked very well if the mechanical setup is good, definitely the most 'plug-n-play' gyro I have ever used.

You need to go into the negative numbers (below 0.0) on the DX8 to get the gyro into rate mode.

with the 401 a solid red light/led should be on when turned on
this is heading hold mode, the gyro should always start in hh mode
if you move the rudder the red light will flash
in rate mode the red light will go out
