  • Fried Scorpion Esc

    I have a Trex 500, it was running a scorpion 3026-1600kva motor with a scorpion commander 70 sbec 26v.
It seemed a bit sluggish, so I reset the high/lower throttle & programmed the gov to medium.
The power was superb, only pumped the pitch a few times but it took of like a rocket, but it did't last too long....
I was flicking between normal/st1/st2 (75/75/90% throttle) and you could notice the difference which you could not see before.
Was in st2 when all power was lost, even though I had no control I hit throttle hold, it hit the ground, landing in dry grass that had been cut this week, as I was walking over to it it caught fire. So there's me swing a 500 about by its tail & wacking it against the floor, the canopy broke off, I disconnected the lipo & put fire out.
After all of this the only damage was a fried esc, burnt main/auto gears, smashed canopy & broken skids.
Could esc frying be caused by jumping from st1 to st2??

I don't know too much about leccy heli set up's,,
But all I can think that would cause the melt down is the sudden burst of amps, when flicking from 75% to 90%?
maybe it was too much of a jump?

Did you check that the motor didn't have too longer bolts causing it to short out and cause the esc to burn up?
            Cheers Paul

How old was the ESC? I had my align 35a ESC catch fire on my 450 when i first started flying after about 3 flights. It too was under the battery tray, so this may have reduced cooling i guess.

I should think this is just a freak incident and an email to the Scorpion distributor in the UK may be worthwhile. Although if they are anything like Align, they will just tell you to get stuffed!

Get a Castle ESC, much better govenor for a similar price

You have a good case for a replacement. Your contract is with the retailer. You have used a scorpion motor and esc and these should work with each other. Your motor or esc was not fit for purpose and needs to be replaced or you need a full refund. You may need to write a carefully worder letter and you may need to take them to the small claims court. It is not your fault, unless of course the esc or motor had been crashed before the fault developed. Once crashed all bets are off. Give more info about when and who you bought the motor and esc. It should work at 90% and it should also allow changing from one mode to another. What lipo did you have? Post links of all three. A good closeup of the esc might tell us which component failed. If one fet isn't properly heatsinked then it can fail. This will then cause the others connected in parallel to fail and then you have a direct short across the supply which will blow the fuse. You could ask why the safety fuse didn't blow. Escs don't have safety fuses and perhaps they should, especially when they have builtin becs the loss of which cause loss of control of a heli.

An fet switch would be quite cheap and fast enough to prevent a fire. This could be external provided escs with becs had two power lines. One for high power and one for the bec.

System engineering could be improved, without significant cost increases.

Bolts are ok, have been flying ok for 3 or more weeks.
