  • electronics techie help !! scorpion ESC

    Hi all firstly can any one id the component in the attached pic.its green with a silver black white and blue stripe on it. Well i recently came into possesion of a scorpion esc and moter 3 flights later just beeps so I contacted the importer /supplier and with honestly told them it was in warranty but i did not buy it, scorpion warranty is not transferrable !! So they said send it back for a 35% disc on a new one which aint too bad . So i pulled it apart and traced the fault to the green possible resister ? on the signal wire, By passed this and it works a treat but i need to know what it does or did Thanks Jason

    That will be a resistor, size wise, someone like Steve (xygax if I've spelt it right lol) is probably best to tell you, as I can't remember the colours

      It looks like a small rf choke i would think all the resistors are surface mount on the speed controller this is most likly the supply to the electronics. can you get a real close in focus picture of where it came from it may be easy to identify from that

      From the colour code

      Blue = six
      White = nine
      black = zero
      silver = x10^2(or 3) i cant remember

      so its a 680Uh choke most liklely as the white is probably grey

        Hi it was inline on the sinal wire before it attached to the pcb. When i removed the heat shrink the end fell off looks to have a black solid core with windings around the outside. Its 7mm long not inc the connection wires the white stripe could be grey Thanks Jason

          Its a choke for sure... the wire thingy gives it away EPCOS|B78108S1684J|INDUCTOR, AXIAL, 680UH | Farnell United Kingdom

          its somthing like that one

            Hey Jason, sorry to hijack your post, but looking at your avatar sort of gives us a clue don't it.

              Yes I am a sparky but dont do that much with electronics. So is it needed Cheers Jason

                Ain't an electronics wizz either, but there's a good chance it being a choke it's there as a R/F preventative measure, not a good thing to by-pass with all the leccy sh*t buzzing around the R/X etc. Be useful to know what an expert thinks there wouldn't it. Watching this with interest.

                  Xygax is right, its definitely a choke, and there to prevent voltage spikes making their way back into the receiver.

                  You'll probably get away without it as long as there is a good solid signal, but you'll run into problems as the signal strength drops.

                  It should be possible to work out the value given a clearer photo, but again, xygax is probably pretty close with his estimate.

                  Because it is in the signal lead, it won't be carrying much current, so the inherent resistance won't be too important. Too high a value could start to round off the edges of the pulses, which would reduce the resolution, but the input impedance of the circuit beyond is probably quite high, so again, I agree with xygax' estimate.
                  Pete

                  No matter how much you push the envelope, it'll still be stationery.

                    Hi the bands are definatly Blue Grey black and Silver.I have just had a magnifier on it. So if the site i have been on is right it 6 x 8 x1 =68 uH with a tolerance of 10% .Does that sound right and would maplin sell them ?? cheers Jason

                      You have a Farnell part number. Just order it from them. Chokes are a bit dubious in signal leads anyway. Some escs have them, others don't. I'm not sure why one should be in a signal lead. I would think it would make things worse rather than better. Do a range check before flying, there may be a reason it's there than only the designer knows about.

                        Hi thanks for all the help but does the black zero make it 680 or 68 as its a multipler ???
