  • Jimmyhorns motor winding service.

I had an empty Kontronik 700 motor. What I mean is that it was a complete motor without the windings.

So i had to get it wound and it was around the same time the James was posting that he was offering a winding service. I then decided to send it to him to let him play with and see what he could come up with rather than send it to one of the other guys in Europe which I was going to do.

So to cut a long story short the motor came back a while back but for one reason or another I could not get it on the air until recently so took the chance to get it in my heli of choice which is the Agile 7.2.

For reference the motor that came out of the Agile was a Kontronik Pyro 750-50 Competition.

I was pleasantly surprised by the power for a 700 stator. See pics below for power recorded on the Kosmik.

Efficiency is a hard one to comment on at the moment but I suspect it is slightly less than a standard Pyro due to the power increase. Max temp of the motor directly after the flight was 53.4 deg C using a infared temp gun. I never measured a standard 700 with a temp gun but it never felt this hot. Even though this is still massively lower than other brands standard motors which is due to the design of the motor can which has more effective and efficient cooling.

Overall Im very happy with the motor and having looked at the motor winds inside having stripped the motor for curiosity purposes I was again surprised by the standard of the work also

Would happily recommend James's service to anyone looking to get a motor hand wound.

    Cheers

It will vary for each motor depending on what you want. PM him saying what you want and James will give you a price

It's very variable, and I don't mean that to sound like a cop out...

There are lots of different factors that go into it:

How easy the existing motor is to disassemble.

How easy the motor is to break.

How complicated the winding patten and terminations.

How thick the wire used is.

In simpler terms you are looking at anything from £50 for an align 600mx to £150 for larger higher end motors.

If I was charging for the pyro I wound for Ben it would be around £100 and this would come with a lifetime winding warranty.

Bens pyro is a 6+5 1.25mm delta wind which is about a 40% increase on copper cross section when compared with stock, hence the ability to pull much more current in spikes. In testing on a logo 600sx we could not get this motor to bog, at all

Think we might have to chat about an 850 I have here.

Would be easier and quicker to send it to you as I want to change the kv rating. PM on its way

And here are some photos of the winding itself (although this is a 6+6YY 1.25 wind of the same model motor I have done for someone else).

What difference does it make doing it 6+6 higher kv?

Well there are three basic winding patterns for these kind of motors:

                        Y
                        YY and
                        Delta

Y isnt really used much though, as its not the useful and only utilises 1/2 of the stator teeth in this kind of motors stator. (this is a 12 stator tooth 10 pole (12N10P))

The more turns you have, the lower the kv, and Delta winding gives you a lower KV compared with the same windings in a YY configuration.

the 6+6 YY on this particular motor will give you ~530 to 540kv, but you cant transpose that across to different type of motor, be it a different make, or a different model of the same make.
