  • Align BL 600M motor - repairable??

I recently bought a 550e V1 airframe to be my new 'basher'
It came with the old 600M motor which when turned by hand is extremely stiff & the casing seems to be running 'out of true'
On spool up when it almost gets light on its skids there is a Crack and the rotors go into free wheel. The oneway bearing seems fine, but i might replace it anyway. The motor is really notchy compared to my 600mx.
Is this motor worth repairing, as it looks to have seen better days.
Jimmyhorns did a useful thread on how to replace the bearings on an Align motor so I sort of know how to do it, but at what point do you decide to call it a day and buy a new motor

    Thanks,
    Dan.

    Hey Dan.

The old 600M's motors pitfall was it's tiny inner bearing, the front shaft bearing was great, but the one supporting the back of the shaft nearer the rotating can was something like 9x6x3 and so took a pounding. This meant bearing changes were quite frequent if you flew a lot.

You could strip it and if there is no internal damage, replace the bearings and keep flying until it goes again. Or you could fit the 600MX, have more power a a better size of bearing front & back.

I would be tempted ditch it and try get yourself a 2nd hand 600mx motor as its a basher.
You could try a bearing replacement but if the can is bent then its a no go really?

If it is the bearings that have gone align no longer sell the bearing and shaft kits and I couldn't find any available in the UK. I had to get a shaft and bearing set from the US when my dad was out there, GrandRC I think it was. The problem is to get the existing bearings out can be a pain. I turned down the existing shaft will the collar went through the middle of the motor but still caught on the large bearing and then tapped it out. It's now running fine but not sure for how long. Bearings should be quite easy to source but getting the existing bearings out can be a pain in the ass. Then again for the price of a new 600MX it's probably worth giving it a try.

..also just to add.. if the motor is on the way out i'd be carefull about using it as it may burn out your esc in the process.

There's also the Turnigy heli motors as an inexpensive option. I have not tried the bigger ones but have used the 450 and 500 size motors and they worked suprisingly good.

i've used both the 500 an 600 sized Turnigy SK3 competition series motors and i was very impressed.

i also posted a thread about changing the bearings in a 600M motor :

              http://www.rcheliaddict.co.uk/align-...ng-change.html

its a 30 min job so worth a try before you spend on a new motor IMO

Thanks for the advise. Yeah the can is bent so it's probably a no go then.
I had a Turnigy motor in my 500 which was trouble free, so I might give one a go. The SK3's also look like a good motor for the money.

                Thanks,
                Dan.

To be honest most of the turnigy stuff is good and also excellent value..

Although it would probably work the KV is a bit lower than the align that you're replacing. I would be tempted to get this instead as the KV is closer to the original motor Turnigy HeliDrive SK3 Competition Series - 4956-1250kv (550 & 600/.50 size heli)

                      Hope this helps,

I had not seen that one before, they must have at least three 600 size motors because there's another one that is not the SK3 that looks almost exactly like the older Align motor.
