  • Care of brushless motors

    Hi All,

Real dumb question, but I've now got four helis - none huge, but three with brushless - two outrunners, one inrunner. My mcpx still has the stock coreless brushed "powerhouse" ;-) (my helis are all Blade, 450x, 450-3D, 130x and mcpx)

My question is - I've never done anything to these motors in terms of maintenance care. I assume I should really be oiling them occasionally?

Would this be appropriate : Scorpion Motor Bearing Lubrication Kit (30ml) [scorpoil]

Should I be using something like this - if so, how often, etc?

    All advice greatly appreciated!

If its a scorpion motor then a couple of drops on each bearing every 20 flights is a good idea. Otherwise there's not really any need.

The bearings in my first 450 seized due to lack of oil. As Stanley says its not usually necessary. It does no harm though. Bearings can be replaced although getting them out can be difficult.

I put a drop of oil on motor bearings every 20 or so flights too

Doesn't do any harm and I swear my 130x motor comes down cooler than it did before I ever oiled the bearings

I didn't do anything with my 450 turnigy motor. After 150 flights the shatf was worn around the top bearing, but the bearings are still fine.
But i oil my scorp 700 motor. Might get a Boca bearing kit for it so I dint have to! I hate regular maintenance things like that!
Be nice if you could use sealed bearings but I guess they can't take the heat of the motors?

Motors shouldn't really get hot. Not with all the air available. Except that the bigger the motor the more watts are trying to escape through the surface, so at some point ( as motors get bigger) extra surface area will have to be designed in.

I oil mine occasionally. I've had two motors fail because of bearings either disintegrating or welding themselves to the shaft. It can't hurt.

I'm on holiday this week and wind stops play so I'm looking for peeps I can help No more, no less

                Hey Vikki,

Good to see you back on here and i'm not the only one thinking that!

Anyway got that off my chest, I also Use a Oil but no ordinary Oil, I use a spray from 3 in 1 High performance PTFE (Teflon Basically) lubricant, use it with the straw on the end and it fizzes and seeps into the nooks and cranys of the bearings, makes my Gaui Purr!
