  • This Heat!

Has anyone done any mods to help keep there ESC and Motor cool in this heat?

Mines always came down warm/hot but this heat is making both the ESC & Motor come down very very hot!

Measure it with a heat gun.

Mine sometimes come down hot to touch in this weather so I put my infared heat gun on it and its only 50 deg C or something silly. Really need to measure to find out just how hot as my hot might not be your hot lol.

I'll measure it next time I'm out. My motor in spring use to come down warm around 43 degrees, today I couldn't hold my finger against it for more than 1 second. The esc wont quite as hot but a lot warmer then usual.

With infrared temp guns it's very important that the emissivity is set to match the surface of whatever you're measuring or you won't have an accurate reading.

But this raises the question; can we use some kind of simple touch test to get at least a rough idea. The motor in the Triabolo is running really hot now. It used to be just slightly warm in cool weather, now it's so hot I cannot hold my finger on it for more than a second. But it's certainly not as hot as steam which in theory should be 100C, so maybe in motor terms it's actually not too hot? (This is a Hacker Turnado) I will say though, I have never had an electric motor get this hot.

I reckon anything less then 100 deg C is OK - it feels flipping hot to the touch but most electronics are good for more than that.
If you can hold your finger on it for 1 or 2 seconds, it's fine.
              IMHO

Well It was instantly very uncomfortable to touch. I don't think two seconds was doable unless you're a masochist

I expected it to be a bit hotter than it was back in cooler weather but not such a drastic difference. I'm going to check the ESC logs later and if it also shows much higher temps but normal amps then I can put it down to the weather. If not then I'm worried maybe the motor bearings are going or maybe it needs a bigger motor that won't work as hard?

Got to admit i've not noticed any change with any of mine! but then I do only fly sport so plenty of airflow over the airframe for most of the flight.

The esc/motor will come down hotter at the moment because the weather is hotter.. in the winter where there air is cold (usually -5 to 8 degrees) it offers good cooling.

best no one fly while the uk is hot, not like other countries get this hot and they still fly heli's.
Just get on with it and fly.
