  • what should i expect from a life rx pack?

Hi, got 2 zippy 2500mAh life batteries which I got new from HK to use in my velo50 as just got rid of the align 2in1 glow n reg. Flew my velo for the first time since the change over yesterday and it was about a 7min sedate fly about. The battery was charged friday on my Hyperion eos 1420i charger at 1c and checked on my Hyperion battery checker which has a setting for life and it registered 99% full. Come Saturday afternoon checked it prior to flying and it said 93%, after the first flight checked again and it said 35%!!! Is this normal?? other thing is, I checked my other fully charged one and it said 81% without doing anything with it??? didn't think I would expect such a high self discharge only after 18hours from being charged?? Any advice as not feeling a lot of confidence in them at the mo.

You can't use a battery checker on a LiFe pack, the results will be wrong.

Just charge it up again and see how much you put back in, that is the only way to determine what has been used.

That checker is the same as a smart guard, and as per your experience mine gives different results every time I plug it in! I think the only accurate part you can trust is the voltage reading.

Cheers men, as you would expect I am pretty nervous about trusting the readings, wasn't sure if I had a couple of duff batteries...after all you wouldn't trust a lipo in your heli with a dodgy reading????

The only way to do it properly is to charge a pack, do one flight of "normal" flying, then charge it at 1C and see how many mah you put back in.

Say you put 400mah back in the pack, then I'd do 5 flights max between charges.

LiFe batteries have very very low self discharge, so don't worry about that.
Current fleet: Goblin Thunder Sport (700), Trex 700L, Logo 600, Specter 700, Henseleit TDR, V-Baaa control.
Next heli: I have pretty much everything I want. Maybe I'll upgrade some electronics or something.

Will do, my flight was very sedate as testing my YS60sr for tune so was just some circuits, inverted and flips, nothing too strenuous on the servos. I'll give it a charge tomorrow and see what gets put back in, my only negative is if it puts a lot back in would that signal a bad battery??

If it the same with the smart guard, I plug my life pack to it, then press type, that change it to life readings!

That seems to give me the correct readings on mine.

Yep, put it on life setting. that's why I have this concern as to the readings that I am getting from it! As for my charged unused life self discharging to 81% not even a day after a full 1c charge only fuels my worries as everyone says that they have a very low discharge rate?? Think i'm gonna have to see what gets put in on next charge, suppose my checker could be giving me bum readouts?

Put your unused 81% pack back on the charger.

I bet it tells you it's charged in under a minute and will have put back hardly anything. Maybe 1 or 2 mah.

That would then tell me not to believe the checkers readings!!! lol, cheers

I've got a LiFe on my tx. It charges up to 10.8V, then drops to 10.0V, and it stays at 9.9 or 10.0 for ages. You can proably measure the volts to work out state of charge, but you would have to very accurate to 10mv or 1mv. You might have to correct for temperature and possibly calibrate for each battery. Checking the charge (mah) going back in is the simplest.

I've been used to various batteries through my time and various checkers specific to the battery type and they have always been close on their readings before charging and seeing what went back in afterwards. New to Life though, this is why confused.com, but not recharged yet to see after.

what should i expect from a life rx pack?

I have a 2s 2100mah life pack on my fusion and I can happily get 5 x7m flights out of a pack.

I take about 150-200mah per flight so even conservative I have taken about 50% from the pack but I'm fine with that. Have 3 life packs so have enough for all day easy

Well just charged both my life packs. The pack that I hadn't used, but showed 81% on my checker, took 11mA. The pack I flew took 680mA. So, many thanks to all you guys who gave advice on not go on checker results but to just see what goes in on a charge. I guess I would get 3 sedate flights or 2 hard out of each pack to be safe. Might invest in another better quality pack so I've got enough for a days flying. Cheers
