  • Sense Check and any advice?

    Hi Guys,

I already have a charging case, but I want to update i. So I am going to get a new case from Maplins which is a bit bigger and deeper than my current one, so I want to upgrade having seen the one that Ian (Coolice) made for I think Raquel Bellot?.

Can someone clever in electrics confirm there is no glaring issue with my wiring schematic and also if anyone has any advice or sage wisdom to impart, I would be grateful.

The pic is of my current charging case which is a bit tight for space and heat dissipation.

    Cheers guys.

    Just a though?
Rather than have step downs to 12v for the 2 fans/2 cathodes, couldn't you run in series @24v.

I am no expert by any means and i would rather someone who knows confirm or deny

Its a thought, but what would happen if one fails, does the voltage go up or do both things not work (you can tell I'm not electrickery centric!)?, also I do want a 12v for a charging socket (like a cig' socket in a car) to allow charging / running of laptops, or charging phones etc

      Thanks for the idea though

If 1 fails then the 2 won't work. It would break the circuit rather than supply 24v to 1, I think.

Maybe I'm missing something, but I'm not seeing any step-down, just a straight feed of 12V from one of the pair of PSUs?

You need to take your 12V from the first PSU. If you take it from the second as you've drawn, you have +12 for negative and +24 for positive. Still 12v potential difference, but can cause problems for stuff you're trying to power with it.

Also, USB is 5V, so the device you plan to fit will need to be able to take a 12V supply and drop it down.

Next heli: I have pretty much everything I want. Maybe I'll upgrade some electronics or something.

              Hey Buddy.

If you want a pre-cut deck to suit the new case give us a shout, as I do design these to order individually for those without cutting services. Could also have some text like Raquel's if you wanted

I'd go with a 10amp chassis socket to be safe, just read the 6amp one.

Are you monitoring amp draw on the AC input? If yes, I wouldn't go with an amp/volt meter on the AC line, it'll be more useful on the supply going to the charger and ancillaries.

Cheers Ian, might be in touch for the deck, it was one thing I was concerned about.
I was thinking of a car cigarette power socket and then plug a USB charger into that?
My ammeter is reading the amps I am pulling from the house mains, just to give me an idea of what is required for when I get a genny eg. What I am pulling off the AC supply. I'm not getting the point of one on the the 24v DC supply. The PL8 would tell what it is pulling for charging and by putting the ammeter on the AC in I would know what is being pulled from the main supply, no? Maybe I need both :-)
I bow to you vastly superior brains on this mate and any advice is gratefully received. I have most of the components in my current set up so cost should not be too bad to upgrade.
Re the comment above re wiring from big pops (Thanks mate), not sure I understand it, can someone put it into idiots English please. Cheers all.
