  • PL6 Charge times

Can I just check that this is normal please. I have a Pl6 with a server based PSU with 2400w at 25v.

When I charge a 2200 3cell battery from storage charge (about 50%) using either preset one accurate charge, or preset 2 faster charge, at 1C, it is taking about 80 mins and 70 mins respectively to charge. Is this right, or should it be charging faster?

whilst scrolling through screens when charging, the dc power supply screen reads 25v at 0.7A, and the faster charge, lipo generic screen reads around CHG: 1.30A. On a 2200 battery should I be getting charge rates closer to 2.2A?
    Cheers

You should be closer but the good thing about the 6 and the 8 is that they will only charge at a rate that's suitable for your packs and no more. How old are the packs and what is the IR screen showing in terms of cell resistance

If your using the 1C option on the charger it will do a safe charge and it's very conservative on the current side of things.
Hold down the button and go past the 3/4c option and you can then set the charge current by hand. Set it to 2.2A and watch those electrons fly.
It should be done in 40mins ish

The charge rate to use with a particular battery is very debatable. The slower the charge rate the longer they will last and the lower the voltage you charge to the longer they will last. You can also stop charging when the current drops to 10% of the initial charge current or stop at 20%. Many people charge at 2C and stop earlier. If you start at 50% charge , charge at 2C and stop early you can charge in about 20mins. That's 4.4 amps and stop at about 0.6amps for 2200mah. If batteries can't take that charge rate then they are probably past their best.

On a Wayne-Giles meter a good 2200mah lipo is less than 5 milliohms per cell. Different capacities would vary in proportion. Ir goes up with temperature.

Edit OOPS of course it goes down as temperature goes up. Thanks MARK.

Great, thanks all, that is useful. Just done one at 1.9A charge and it took 40 mins on accurate charge. Checked the last two batteries and the resistance across the cells was in the 4 milliohms ranges so that sounds ok.

Ir does down as temperature increases and goes up as temperature decreases.
