  • PL8 CRC Error?

I am trying to connect my PL8 to the PC using their fuim3 usb adaptor and of course their charger control software.

I have used this many times before without problem and it is installed right..

But when i try to connect to the PL8 to edit the presets, i get this error:

    crcfailed.jpg

    "CRC Error"

So whats that and how do i fix it? I have searched the forum/google/manuals/troubleshooters but can't find anything?

    Thanks

You could try a reset to defaults to see if that clears the preset error, but you would then need to setup and custom presets that you may have created

Thanks for the suggestions guys, will try them once the PL8 has finished cycling a battery (Had to program manually with the buttons - heaven forbid!)

          Will report back later =)

            Update:

I tried running a computer disc check and it came back as all ok

I then tried deleting all my presets off the PL8 using the buttons (so manually)

I tried connecting again and it came back with the same error "CRC Preset error"

So I clicked onto the "firmware tab" and clicked "Factory Restore" - now I wasn't sure if the PC and PL8 were connected but the factory restore worked and the PL8 made a Beep.

I then went over to the presets tab, cleared all the standard presets and started re-entering my own, one by one.

Everything is now working perfect, so can only presume there was some sort of bug in the PL8.. I have now made a back up of my presets so if it happens again it will be a quicker fix.. but in short a factory restore fixed it.

These are jolly complicated bits of kit aren't they? Are the instructions clear enough that a relative beginner could use them?

The pl8/6 are very easy to use. You pick your pack type, set the number of packs, set the C rating of the charge ( or current if you want ) and if you want to use bananas or just balance leads (pl8) then it starts after a quick screen that prompts you to confirm pack type. It's one very easy to use charger, the only one that I like more is the bantam bc8dx.

Once you're used to the way they work they are very straightforward to use, no more complicated than any other charger out there.

I'm having problems with Preset CRC Errors too, using the CCS. Tried doing a factory reset and setting each preset to "clear" via the software, but it's still giving me CRC errors. Any ideas?

CRC errors = cyclic redundancy check.

ITs a mechanism used to verify the authenticity of something generally. If it has a CRC check error, it generally means as pointed out above something may have become corrupted somehow. Its comparing something to something else, I'm not sure what though. The best fix is to sync them up somehow, but I dont have a PL8 nor have i ever used the software so not sure what its doing. Im not sure where its doing the CRC check, best just speak to the manufacturer I think if a full factory reset didnt fix yours!

Thats a pain you could do without mate.. If you look at the charger manually, are the presets in there still? If so, try manually deleting them by selecting the preset, press "INC & DEC" together for options, then delete preset, try this manually until you've completely cleared all the presets, then try to connect to the PL8 and do another reset.

Also as a side note, is the PC/PL8 definitely connected?

                          Hi mate,

Thanks. Just got it sorted. Think one of the presets and/or the library preset was corrupt. Worked out how to rearrange and copy/paste them. Deleted the ones I don't want and it's working again. What should I set the current/voltage values too? Got max A at 45A and low voltage at 23v. Sound about right?

I think i've figured it out.. I think although CRC errors are like a computer thing (corrupt data).

So "CRC Preset Error" means just that.. it means one or more of the presets has gone corrupted and cannot be read. The trouble is, it doesn't tell us which preset is corrupt. So when I did mine I just deleted them all and started again.

So you must have deleted the corrupt one by chance although would still recommend a proper reset.. I purchased my PL8 brand new btw and it was only a few weeks in I had the CRC Error (wasn't to impressed tbh being a £220 charger) BUT since resetting it, its not done it again and has been a fab charger.

But yeah getting back to your question, if your PSU is the coolice one (same as mine - HP DPS600) then I have it set to 23v and 42amps as a safer option.. but I would go upto 45a if you need it..

I have seen videos on youtube of people taking those PSUs to +50 amps and they hold up ok so I'm confident the PSUs can handle it.

CRC is like a check sum. It effectively adds up all the bytes in your file and puts the result at the end of your file. It means if one or more of the bits in your bytes are wrong, it will detect it. Otherwise your presets could do unexpected things. This shouldn't happen.
