  • Optipower 3600 2s rx battery question

I've just bought the above as a receiver battery for my T700n.

Thing is, I expected it to come with the red JST two pin connector

    The male one above.

so I could plug it straight into the align 2in1 reg (not a new debate on the pro's & con's of these please), as the 3 cell batts do as a matter of course.
    But it didn't.....

Can I remove the attached two pin servo tab, replace it with the two pin red tab & use this as my connection point?

    All help gratefully accepted.

Stick an EC3 on them, a much better connector.

      +1

... or any other decent power connector of your choice, pretty much anything would be better than the 2 pin JST connection it comes with as standard.

The Optipower Rx packs I've bought come with a 3 pin connector and also a pair of heavier guage leads that are unterminated. I've left the 3 pin connector on and put an EC3 on the pair of unterminated leads. I then changed the 2 pin connector on the Align 2 in 1 to an EC3 as well and now I have multiple Rx packs that I can use on my helis.

Is the three pin connector a balance lead. Don't cut that off!

No its not. The balance lead has the normal white plug point.

To directly answer the original question, 'yes' you can do that.

Give the 2-in-1 a fighting chance though and don't do it, would be my recommendation though.

May be time to get some of them there ec3's then.
Thought I could simply refit the crimped ends & fly. Don't like soldering, but it's a necessary evil that I'm getting better at...

Thanks for the help & advice.

                  Good choice

Leave the 3-pin connector as it is though and put the EC3 on the unterminated cables that are on the pack just for that purpose.

Just ordered a pack of 10 from FL.
Might as well do them all.

                    Thanks again.

Thing about soldering is to get things clean and hot then make sure the solder flows all around. Both things need to be hot so the solder flows to both surfaces. Make sure that everything is clamped while the solder is cooling until it is solid. If you move them too soon you will get a bad or dry joint and you will need to suck the solder out and start again. (Unless you have separate flux) Solder suckers are useful. Cheap plastic can melt easily or get soft so it can help to fit two deans plugs together to keep the contacts in place. It can be tricky to get enough heat to get a good joint without melting plastic housings. Also when you clamp things use some cardboard to stop the clamps acting as heatsinks.

The other thing is to remember that they can take a while to cool down. You can move things to cool elsewhere but they can make nasty marks on work surfaces which can be very dangerous.

The reason the 2S cell comes with two plain silicon leads (20AWG) is for specific use with FBL machines. The smaller slicon leads with the JR connector would be fine for low load applications but for high load like FBL you really should use higher spec cables particuarly if you are running 7.2 or 8.4V systems. The current draw on FBL under high load is way north of 4amps which is the max most RX cables and JST or JR plugs will take, hence 10amp + secondary silicon leads.
