recharge ultra-guard

OK, so stupidly I left my ultra-guards connected over the winter and now two won't even respond to a battery checker.

Can I recharge them with my PL8 ?

I don't see why not. Pl8 has a recovery mode.

It will either work, or it won't. If it doesn't you can buy the replacement lipo for about 5 quid.

Trouble is, the ultra-guard battery is charged only via the balance port. How would you connect it to a PL8 ?

Tom, i think there is a setting on the PL8 to charge from balance port only.
I looked in to this myself, but i have a PL6 which does not have that option.

Doh! I'm an idiot! I've got a PL6 also, not a PL8 .... I've got a flight pack installed at the moment with motor disconnected. Going to leave for 30 mins or so to see if it can recover itself off the flight pack ...

If its not even reading on a battery meter, then the lipo is likely dead

It might be worth sending Andy a message to see if you can buy the lipo separately.

I had the same thing happen with a heli i wasn't using, in the end i connected a spare 2s lipo i had lying around.
You can buy replacement lipos from Fastlads etc.

You'll be wanting one of these then:

With the old one, try using a proper volt meter to read what the actual voltage is as the lipo testers draw power to run their display so with a very low pack it may not be able to drive the tester yet may still be recoverable.

With a PL8 I'd give it a try, but with a PL6 I don't think you have the option unfortunately...

For £6, I'm just going to buy a new LIPO rather than faff with it too much! Not worth the hassle for such a small sum ...

The annoying thing I discovered last time I tried to buy one of those small 2 cell packs is that the postage was going to cost as much as the item itelf due to RM not taking LiPos.

Can't you use any 2S lipo of a similar size? You could get one with a charging lead as well as the balance lead so it can easily be charged if the same issue crops up again in the future.

Yes, any similar lipo will do, the Opti one is exactly the right size and has only the wires you need so it makes for a neater install, but yes, others would do as well.

There are leads available that will let you charge a small pack like this even if your charger does not support balance wire only charging :

I had the same problem and thought I'd charge it through the optiguard board. It got really hot and thought I'd blown the board. Bought a replacement lipo from raj and all is good now

Yeah, I tried charging it through the board for 30 mins. It got hot too and didn't really improve. New LIPOs ordered ...
