  • align 600M motor bearing change

i just thought i'd post this info to help others.

i have the old Align 600M (RCM-BL600M) motor in my Align 550V1 and after a bad crash the motor sounded like a bag of old spanners.....time to order the Align 600M shaft and bearing set.

not a chance...after a lot of internet searching it turns out that i could not find any stock here in the UK.....i could get the 600MX set of course

so it was either wait weeks for a set from HK/US or buy the newer 600MX motor for £90

BUT, after more searching i found the measurements for the 2 bearings i needed (the shaft was ok) so ordered them from RCbearings.co.uk for £2.60 posted.....it was worth a gamble for that money !

    here are the sizes :

    5x9x3 (MS) Bearing (x1) MR95zz
    6x13x5 (MS) Bearing (x1) MR686zz

DSCN3711 (550x352).jpg the old Align bearings are in the foreground for comparison.

well they fitted into the motor perfectly :

after pressing the shaft back in with an Arbor press...all was well and the motor runs smoothly.

i hope this encourages others with what seems a now obsolete motor in terms of UK spares to spend £2.60 on repairs and not £90+ on a new motor

I can see me placing a massive order for bearings from that place very soon

I'm in exactly the same position now with a wrecked set of bearings, but unable to prise the motor apart. I've released the only grub screw I can find but the can of the motor doesn't want to come away from the windings. I've tried gently drifting the back of the shaft with a hammer and drift but no joy. Any advice out there before I end up scrapping a perfectly good motor for the sake of <£5 of bearings?

Use a bigger hammer? Seriously, what have you got to lose? Sure there isn't another grubby hiding in there?

          Hey.

On all my Align motors if I am replacing the bearings I heat up the back of the casing around the shaft area with a pencil blow torch, this helps increase the tolerance of the hole slightly around the shaft, then it's much easier to tap the shaft out. Also the heat softens any Loctite used on the grub screw(s).

Obviously be careful, you want the area to get hot but don't direct the flame from your pencil blow torch at the windings etc. It helps to have the motor sat on two blocks of wood, so the shaft can slide out into open space.

On re-assembly, do the reverse. I mark the motor shaft to align it against the back of the can for the grub screw, then heat up the rear of the casing again and lightly tap the shaft into place. At this point with new bearings fitted you don't want to have to use a greater force of hammer action to seat the shaft.

No, checked for hiding grubscrews and there's nothing. Next stop is a bigger hammer and maybe a little heat!

              Hi

If it's crash damage then the bearing replacement will do the trick but if it's just wear and tear then normally the actual shaft wears where the bearings sit so just swapping out the bearings won't help much, I have no idea why the 600M service kit hasn't been available for a looong time, it seems Align just haven't made them available for all that time.

              Cheers
              Bob

Many thanks. There's been no crashes at all, just normal use in my TREX 550E. I'll try and get the sucker apart then decide where to go next. Looking at Turnigy 1100kv and 1250kv motors as alternatives. Are there any recommendations for a low-cost replacement motor? I don't actually need any more power than the 600M motor and definitely don't want any more current draw on the packs. Any advice gratefully received.

Bigger hammer used, motor halves now apart! The smaller bearing was totally wrecked whereas the large one is fine. The shaft appears to be perfect with no moarks. Should be an easy and cost effectvie fix! Many thanks to all those that helped.

putting the motor in the oven at 110c for 10-15 minutes, then a punch and a hard hammer got my motor apart. Bearing replacement was easy once you've got it open.

Add some potatoes, carrots, parsnips and a joint of beef, and another hour and a half and you'll have a nice roast dinner too haha

i find when knocking bearings out use a copper drift that way you wont burgh the shaft up
and here is a place you can try BRT Group Lincoln they have ill get them for ya all bearings and if not in stock they will get them for you hope this helps
all you need is the bearing number or if there is a shop near your location take it in and they will get details from it
