  • Mains supply too small?

I am in the process of buying a new charger for my 6s 5000mah batteries. If you are charging 6 batteries at 30a which is connected to a suitable power supply can the mains handle it? The mains are rated at 13A.

Can someone clarify things for me? Obviously people are charging off the mains at 30A+.

    Thanks,
    David.

Yes no problem. 6S is about 25 volts. 25Volts at 30 Amps is about 750 Watts. So the PSU will take a bit over 3 Amps from the mains.

Your normal socket can take approx 3000w, before you start tripping fuses

I run a 2600w power supply in my living room and have pulled in excess of 100amps no problem

If the mains are rated to 13 amp thats 240v x 13a = 3120 watts. (assuming normal mains is 240v, is in AUS)
          As dillwhacker says a 6S fully charged is (4.2x6) is 25.2v. So 25,2v x 30 amp = 756w

So well within a standard power point.

          cheers

Thanks very much guys for clearing that up.

I didn't know you calculated it using watts but that makes sense. I thought I should check before I blow up the house!

            Thanks,
            David.

Watts is energy used per second. Volts X amps. Some things like power supplies can take a lot of power at switch on and then a slow blow or antisurge fuse is fitted. Lots of houses will have magnetic circuit breakers rather than fuses. Energy is basically the stuff that heats things up and a big power supply indoors in the hot weather won't be very popular.
