  • Are these PSU's gonna be ok?

I just won these two PSU's on ebay to pair up for 24 volt use. X2 Dell PowerEdge Server 2650 0H694 J1540 HD431 Power Supply PSU DPS500-CB | eBay

Being a bit fick when it comes to electrics, are they gonna be up to the job? Looks like it to me, but want a more informed opinion please. Seemed like a bargain to me.. Was it?

Am I right in thinking that paired up they'll give me 24v at 1000watts?

Remember if you want to link them to make 24v you will need to float the earth. It's easiest to cut a earth of one of the 240v leads. But I HIGHLY recommend you don't. It's best to float the 12v side. More complicated on some psu's but MUCH safer. If you have any questions pm me your number and I will try and help you out. I make a lot of psu's not don't these ones but will take a look.

Ive got a dell poweredge 6650 which supposedly does not have the 12V side connected to earth. I have not checked this myself yet as I am only using one. However if it is the case it may also be true for the 2650 you have. Its certainly worth having a look into it before you go cutting tracks on the PCB.

One psu giving 12V is ok. The problem is that the output need to be earthed. Usually the negative side. If you then connect them in series you will be connecting positive of one to the negative of the other. The other will be earthed and so you will have a direct short across your first power supply. There are lots of ways around this and some are not too good. If you come up with a scheme then post it on here and those who know will tell you if it's ok. It's fault conditions are the problem. Metal cases are earthed so that a fault blows a fuse. If a metal part is left floating bad things could happen, although circuit breakers should take care of it.
