  • Thinking of building a PSU Help needed!

Hi guys, I am in need of a Power supply unit for my new Thunderpower 820cd charger, and I was thinking of building on. I have never attempted anything like this before, but have been encouraged by see other peoples home made power supplies and wanted to give it ago myself.

The power supply I wanted to use is this one:

ACE 700W Black PSU Power Supply with 12cm Red Fan
    Specifications

    New Version ATX 12V 2.2
    PFC & CE Certification
    Input Range : 230Vac, 10A, 50-60Hz
    Cooling: 12cm Red Fan
    Silent with better ventilation
ATX 12V compliant for most CPUs and mainboards

    Outputs

    AC INPUT: 230Vac 10A 50-60Hz Model A-700BR
    DC
    Output
    Max
    +3.3V +5V +12V1 +12V2 -12V +5VSB
    26A 28A 20A 20A 0.3A 2.0A
    700W
It seems to have a 12v 20A output which I believe will be enough for charger 10s cells for my logo 600, and 2 x 2700mah 6s (logo 400) batteries... Am I right in thinking that?

I only ever charge my packs at 1c but could this do them at 2c if I wanted to?

Also am I correct in thinking I will only have to find the 12v 20A output, and plug that straight into my charger?

I am going to make a clear case and build some red leds into it too - hoping to use the 5V output for these.

Just want to make sure it will all work before I buy the PSU,

    Thanks guys

You have this spare, or you buying it? If not, go for the ESP114a as there are some easy guides for it.

A 6s 5000mah pack takes 111watts to charge. So 2c would be fine.

The ATX powersupplies will work but you need a load on the 3.3 and 5v lines of the 12v will most likly be under voltage

This is one I have spare, bought awhile ago thanks Paul.

@xygax - Sorry i am new to this whole thing, what do you mean load on the 3.3 and the 5v?

When you are only using the 12v output you will need to add a burden resistance to the 5v and maybe the 3.3 v lines otherwise the 12v line is unlikely to regulate properly. Its due to it being based on a single transformer design and the feedback is almost certainly on the 5v line.

So you need a resistance between 5v and 0v to make sure the 12v line is stable probably a headlight bulb on glow or similar. at least 1/4 of the rated power 25w or somewhere between 0.5 and 1 ohm

So if i use maybe some leds on the 5v line, will that be okay?

Ok... maybe re read previous post.... Headlight bulb is a low resistance that will take between 5 and 10A from a 5v supply...... A led will take between 0.01 and 0.02A so you woul need to 250 led's or a box of luxions.

or one of these.. Wholesale 100W Power Wirewound Aluminum Resistor 5% 1 ohm (1pcs) there are other shoppes available it was the first one i found

Thanks steve, sorry for dumb questions I have never done this kind of thing before.
