  • Shorted my battery!

My 2s2p 3,400 lipo (flight pack for a 700LE) had finished charging and when I disconnected it I accidentally pulled the wires out of the plastic housing and they very briefly made contact, shorting the battery -a bit of an arcing sound and a small puff of smoke. I checked it with a voltmeter and it now shows 8.09v with both cells still balanced (at 4.05 and 4.04v). No sign of puffing.

Is still it ok to use or should I be worried about trusting it in a TRex 700?

I would use your own judgement on this,,,,, Same thing happened to me and all I did was put it on a charge/discharge cycle on a low setting- pack is still fine a year later,,,so long as it hasn't puffed and the wiring hasn't suffered any damage, then yes ,it will be fine. Now,if this had occurred to a main flight pack as opposed to a rx pack, then no, I would'nt use it..

I'd use the pack on a heli just to discharge it , say 20-35% or more under load but not fly it. Then recharge it or preferably discharge it using the charger.

I just charged it back up and at full charge, just 629mAh has gone back in so it looks like it discharged by something in the region of 20% when it shorted and at 4.04v per cell after the short that isn't anywhere near the danger zone for a lipo cell and as I said, there is no sign of puffing at all.

I've now put it on a slow discharge cycle (at 0.7 Amps) and I notice that the voltage has immediately dropped to about 7.95v -does that sound like a lot of voltage drop at this kind of load? I'm not sure what would be normal but I guess I could put my other flight pack on a similar discharge cycle and see what it does.

That's 3.95 per cell - looks to me ok.

Well I just tried my other pack on the same discharge and it only dropped to about 8.27 so that makes me think I have probably knackered the shorted pack and that it's unwise to fly with it. Thoughts please?

Hmmm... you reckon it's alright? Just seems odd that it drops so much more than my other pack (which is an Align 1,900 and is much newer).

In the bin if you have any doubts at all.

Get a replacement otherwise it will always be in the back of your mind, and if it was to go in you would be kicking yourself.

Yes I reckon that's what I'll do. Not worth the risk. I guess if it's having trouble holding voltage then there's a chance of it causing the Spektrum Rx to reboot during flight with potentially very bad consequences.

In fact I think my charger was showing an incorrect voltage on the discharge cycle. I have two chargers and when I tried it on the other one the voltage was back up at something like 8.2v so I reckon it's probably actually ok.
