  • Heeeeelp...!! PL8 just died...???

    Gutted

I was just charging the batteries to go flying! I had the PL8 plugged into the PSU and the batteries were charging....all good!

I then noticed I had left the output voltage on the PSU at 15v (as I had been using the cellpro 10s) so I decided to stop the charging, and disconnect the charger from the PSU so that I could turn it up to 30v.

When I plugged the charger back in, the connectors flashed and the voltage dropped right down on the PSU display....The charger didn't come back on

This charger has been faultless and I can't understand what's happened, more importantly....The weather is good and I have NO batteries...Proper Gutted!

    Anyone have any Ideas?

    Cheers, Dave.

    So the connectors sparked?

Did the power supply fail or the charger?

      Hey buddy.

      Oooh not good.
Did you disconnect the batteries you were charging at the time to? If not it could have been the sudden rush of power going back the other way.

XYGAX on here (Steve Smith) might know what's popped if this is the case and/or might be able to fix it of Revo can't help, as he's fixed some PL's in the past.

Happened to my PL8 at the RCHA 2013 fun fly. While it was charging batteries, someone unplugged my PSU and plugged their own one in. The charger never worked again but Opti Andy kindly gave me a good price on a replacement one there and then.

          Hi Ian,

Yes mate, I am paranoid about electric's so the batteries, MPA board and banana's were disconnected. I just plugged the Charger back into the PSU and the connector sparks like when you plug 12 packs in, in series!

I will drop XYGAX A pm to see if he knows what might have happened...Last time I had an issue with a Cellpro 10s (my fault that time, hence why I am so careful now!) Revo would have looked at it but it meant shipping it back to Singapore and it wasn't worth it

Time to send some emails I think!

          Cheers Guy's, Dave.

Mines all packed to go back to opti once I get the rma. These pl8 have no front end protection (unlike the 10s) so any spike and bang. This is the second I blew, first was a dodgy server psu running flat out at 12v it spiked and blew the pl8s internals to dust. Second this Friday laptop bag fell on psu voltage adjuster and knocked it down 1v, pl8 had finished discharging so I pushed it back to 30v that spiked the voltage and blew the pl8. **** design that revo had previously designed against but not with the flag ship pl8!

Given that PLs in general are expensive & serious bits of kit, and apparently subject to misadventures, we could really do with a UK-based (or even EU) service centre.

Agreed, you would have thought that the importer could strike up a deal with some UK/EU based electronic repair business to do this sort of work? Same thing with iChargers.

                        Hey all.

I think it's well known that Steve Smith (Xygax) undrakes repairs to PL's at times and Andy @ Opti-Power knows this I think.
Of course some damage isn't repairable.

iCharger is more difficult, while the UK impotence is very helpful, I don't think Junsi is for the more technical help needed for fault finding.

                          Cool.

Is that an official service ? If so, they maybe need to advertise it a bit better.

Did you check the internal fuses?
