  • I've got no telemetry - how do I tell when my batteries getting low?

    Hi all,

I just got a new 450 (Triton-made TRex clone) and if I'm going to crash it, I'd rather it were my fault because I flipped it on the cyclic rather than the fact that the battery died and it just dropped out the sky!

I've got a DX6i so no inbuilt telemetry receiver and I also don't have an apple device to use the (unfortunately named! ) Spektrum STi setup so how do I ensure that I stop flying before the battery forces me to?

I know I can set a Timer on my DX6i but how do I learn what I should set that to without flying and crashing?

    Cheers,

    Matt

if your using a 2200 pack, with moderate head speed, set timer for e.g. 4min. once landed check capacity to see how much your aiming for over 20% to protect your packs

also your esc may have a low voltage cutoff where the tail will hunt to warm its time to land, but depends if set high enough to give you al least 20% left

Start with the timer set low and gradually increase until you hit the right number ...

It is only ever going to be a guide, but better than nothing.

You can also set most ESC to give you a hint when volts are getting low, either reducing power or pulsing or similar ...

set your timer to 4 minutes to start with, then measure the percentage of charge left in the battery, don't go above 80%, then adjust your timer accordingly to not go below 20% left in the battery.....simples

Most (me included) use a timer. I think very few use telemetry (although some clearly do) to choose when to land. Certainly everyone at our club just uses a timer.

              Thanks all,

Looks like a timer is the way to go.

Also, if you land then check and your checker says 20%,you're probably pushing it fractionally too much as the voltage will climb back up slightly when there's no load. Ideally the way to check 80% rule is to monitor how many mah go back into the pack when charging.
