My Coolice PSU just arrived

We have made our own server PSU's here at Stainburn Heli Club but looking at Ian's units I would happily purchase one without a second thought.

Ian is a man who I have never met but actually followed (video's, forum posts etc etc) since 2007 when I started this hobby.

I feel he isn't a man who would spend time building PSU units to sell out to the public to make a few quid knowing they may be faulty.

My thoughts are cast like it or not.

I got mine few days ago. They are so quiet I though that actually was not on....lol

Actually for some unknown reason a couple of them don't power up on our generator which all seems rather strange for a server psu as I would of thought part of their job would of been tolerance to dodgy mains supplies.

I saw this with mine once and immediately concluded this to be the generator, took it home and charged without any issues - though Ian offered to check it over for me. Server PSUs are made to run servers and not for tolerance to dodgy supplies. when building a server rack you even have 2 different circuits with different supplies at best for both power supplies for power redundancy, in the event of dodgy power delivery you shut them down by UPSs to avoid any damage as especially spin down/ups for the various hard drives would kill the heads, hence you want to shutdown at any given time this happens ...

There is always going to be a little learning to go along with re-purposing kit like this.

The important thing is that Ian has done the 'learning' for us and is taking the complexity out of the task of converting these things for dual use.

I was initially puzzled by the reaction to poor quality mains as well, but Sev is right, when I'm building rack mount solutions in server suites I start by specifying the power quality and redundancy then ensure it by providing a stable UPS solution as well, so in their working environment these supplies don't get to see anything too rough and if they do then they are better not starting up in the first place as these seem to.

Not really a problem anyway as once the generator has a little load on it all is OK, so just put the kettle on before the PSU, which is always a good idea anyway

Like Andy, I have a 32V solution so I'm not likely to need one of Ian's devices any time soon, but if I did then I know where to go.

Alastair / Ian - Thats one snazzy looking psu guys! Nice work with the vinyles too! Such a bargain price for such a quality psu and graphics!

I would like to add that Ian is a great seller, provides great after sales and is a great bloke too.

I have bought PSU's and BT adaptors from him, any questions I've had he's answered.. when I crashed and thought I'd broke my BT adaptor Ian offered to take a look at it for me (which he did) at no expense charged. Not even return postage!

The PSU's he sells are ideal for the hobby and the way he "mods" them is perfectly safe...

As for any faulty ones well that boils down to numbers.. keep in mind the PSUs are used ones that have been repurposed - each 25v PSu is made from 2 PSUs.. so if hes sold 60 units, thats 120 psus and the odds are one or two of them may have an issue.. which I know Ian will do his best for you to sort out.

Got my PSU last week as well and very happy with it. The price of small PSU's here is higher than this beast and the only real difference is they have a switch I was very impressed with Ian's responsiveness and willingness to ship internationally.
