  • Vibe 90

    Hi All

You may have seen my Aurora up for sale. It is one of the best 90's I've flown, but I want something more suited to F3C. I was looking at the Rave ENV, but have been offered a vibe 90 as a px. I know JR heli's are good models, but can be pricey to fix, but any can any vibe owners give me some pointers on the pros and cons of the model?

Dont take too much notice of the JR parts price thing as it's been done to death. I've been flying JR machines for years now and they certainly haven't cost me a fortune, far from it.

Most pilots who fly the FAI/F3C descipline dont tend to crash much due to the higher level of accuracy required, and also because you're not pushing the machines to their absolute limit. Plus you tend to fly the manoevers at a higher level.
I think it's fair to say that if you're into balls out 3D flying then a T-Rex 700 is the better way to go.

The Original Vibe 3D (ie: The Curtis Designed machine) is easilly adaptable for F3C flying and performs very well indeed. However, the Vibe 90SG is a better heli due mainly to it's superior rotor head, but it's very unlikely that you'll pick up a pre-owned one as they're quite rare and people that have one are unlikely to part with it. That said, you would'nt be disappointed with the Vibe 3D.

    Hope this helps

    Garry

One known issue which can be very expensive to fix (ask me how I know) if it goes pear shaped ....... there's a big wide bearing that sits in an ali holder above the clutch bell and below the main pinion. They have a habit of starting to rotate in the block, and the knock-on effect of mullered parts often leads to a complete new clutch, pinion, two bearing blocks, starter shaft and three bearings.... and that lot is expensive.

Those who know make sure all the metal bearings, blocks etc are well and truly green loctited into place to prevent the problem ever arising.

The tail gear box is an all-enclosed fully greased variety which needs regularly packing with the slippery stuff - the heli will soon tell you via a whinning noise when it needs doing.

From memory of my old one, I think that's about all that really bothered me with it. The only 'sensible' upgrade it needs is the Quick UK flyabr cage which is darn site easier to setup than the stock 'L' arms and a lot more robust.

Other than that, it'll last for ever.

It looks good Mark, but can be a little difficult in some light conditions. Since that picture I have fitted SAB mains and tails, and F3C Paddles (KDE I believe)
I had this graphic done on the canopy to see what it looked like, not bad but a little dark to see.

One other thing - the airframe can accept both OS and YS engines without modification, but if you go for YS like I did, it's a pain to get the motor in and out. The reason for this is that the airframe layout is designed such that the engine slides out directly through the bottom when you want to remove it, but the regulator on the bottom of the YS crankcase stops this from happening.

There are ways around it involving taking the under carriage and base plate off, but it's a bit of a cheese.

Little point in waxing lyrical about how great the SG is. Ant has been offered an original Vibe 3D, and that's the one he's asking for advice on, not the SG. So, let's offer what useful information we have on the subject.
