I'm running 1200 Gens Aces, same as you. It's what I had and wasn't going to shell out for new batteries. They're only good for 3:30 at a steady 3000rpm.

Another guy at our club is running the Gens Ace 1400mah 40c, which seem more suitable.
Current fleet: Goblin Thunder Sport (700), Trex 700L, Logo 600, Specter 700, Henseleit TDR, V-Baaa control.
Next heli: I have pretty much everything I want. Maybe I'll upgrade some electronics or something.

Gens-Ace are regularly recommended on the Helifreak X3 forums, and there are some folks there who definitely know how to fly. I followed their advice and went for three of the 6S 1450mAh Gens-Ace packs.

I'm not going to be much help I'm afraid, the X3 has had a couple of hovers in the garden to tach it, and one short test flight, but charger problems have meant I haven't done anything more yet (damn thing was charging cell 6 to 4.4V, and basically grounded this heli until I could replace the charger).

I've got two mad weeks at work coming up, and after that I'll probably need a couple of weeks just tuning this in and getting a feel for it before I really start to fly it.

This X3 has a Turnigy SK3 1700kV motor at the moment, and a 13t pinion. If all goes to plan it'll be running somewhere around 3400-3500rpm in IU2, but at the moment I'm only flying around the 2800-3000 range. It'll hover at 2400, so flight times are going to be significantly shorter once I hit those higher speeds.

Will the Opti 1600 or 1800 packs fit in an X3?

they will fit, but only just. Stick them to the sliding trays with good double sided foam tape as you can't use velcro straps with them, the batteries will not fit in between the frames.
                        Happy Flying! Thanks - Dave

Can I strap them in without the trays?

The reason I'm asking is I'd like to use the same lipos in my G380 as an X3 if possible. So I don't want to stick them down on the trays.

i don't think it is possible to strap them in without the trays pete, i use some opti 1600's in my X3 and they only just fit without any velcro straps. I use some 3M double sided foam tape to stick them to the trays with no straps.
