Any one using gov mode on the stock Hobbywing esc for the 6hv or should i give it a wide birth??

Don't do what I did and try and set it up in 30mph winds.
Spool up is vicious and mine tipped over in the wind and bent the pitch arms on the blade grips.
It also would be advisable not to have expo on the throttle curve you use for spool up as it made it real hard to get the right head speed with the blades at a safe pitch. Maybe just switch directly to idle up.
I decided to switch to a kontronic as slow spool up is something I really like.

If you're flying a flybarless system you can get close to kontronik gov using a cheap esc ;) flybarless units with built in gov can do this quite well ;)

Hobbywing gov is crap, however the esc itself is quite good and is able giving the right timing for the motor (not as good as kontronik though, but no other esc is hehe) running hobbywing is best done on flat curves, with good batteries and the original motor it almost feels like gov mode hehe. I gov my hobbywing with vbar ;) awesome combo to get kontronik like performance, just getting dynamic timing and I would be happy hehe.

Hmm. Just saw a post on another forum that suggests the firmware upgrade improves the soft start.
Be nice to know how "soft" it is.

Well as it happens TONY STEPHENS :(destroyed my esc at the field on Sunday
so its a bit of a sore point:)
I'm gonna get the Castle/c esc and see how that goes.
Anyone using the gov on that esc? is it any good??

My advice is to not use the castle with the Compass motor, we have not been able adjusting it's timing just right so it does not deliver like other escs(makes the motor louder then other escs when you adjust it to match most closely). If you want a good esc and can afford it kontronik with dynamic automatic timing and superior gov + reliable bec is awesome on it, it also delivers even better performance then any other esc.

I have used a CC 85 HV in my 6HV some time ago and this ESC did the job very nicely and also the governor worked very fine. Nothin wrong with using the CC ESC with the standard Compass motor !

A friend of mine get louder motor and less performance then the original esc but the kontronik give more then both, easilly explained by the dynamic timing, ofc the price tag is a bit different.
