  • Keeping the Blitz alive

I have to admit that (sadly) here I am with y own perfect flying fields less than 100yds from the back door and I've been too bushed with all the other stuff I've had to do to get much flying in..or even do more than a brief check-in to this board.
But today was perfect.. zero wind, nice and sunny and a lull in chores so Avro got to play..

I must be getting rusty...first flight I forgot to turn off the remote glow..but boy did I have power even when i bogged it:eagerness:.. and it flew so much better on the second flight when I'd noticed the tail box was twisted and straightened it:neglected:

I flies so well when the dumb pilot sorts such things... proverbial rails and even makes my tick-tocks look good. My only sadness is that it's a heli I like too much to takes silly risks with...

Three superb tanks and then back to hacking down the blackthorn...

I will be getting mine in the air again soon after a bit of a hiatis. I'm hoping the engine issues were all down to the check valve and it will be fine now.

Avro is my fav heli too. Now in the process of converting it to flybarless and fitting a Skookum for a little bit of insurance.
Super to fly and such a wonderful presence in the sky.

I had soooo much trouble with my YS checkvalves..eve without tophat etc... My Blitz has a Cline Reg and checkvalve system...seems bulletproof in comparison..a simple checkvalve just based on the 'flutter' idea

What head you decided on? And the trouble with self-righting is you need to have time to hit the switch ..and the sense to hit it early rather than too late!

There would be more of these about if Neil made a FBL head for it and an electric conversion. Shame:(

the Avro was one on the short list when I bought my Turbulence
I saw Dave Fishers pre-production prototype Avro and its sure is a lovely heli
but I'd love to see the 1st and 2nd prototype just to see how much it changed from the first ideas
Dave told me that they had completly re-made the heli as the first ones weren't good enough

Just putting longer arms on the blade grips, removing the washout and then its a case of fitting longer links from the head to the swash - job done.
As for the Skookum its a case of that I fly the Avro high and if I get in trouble just release the cyclic stick for a mo and hey presto its level.
this is an expensive heli and if it saves me once it will have done its job.

Agreed..but I suspect it'd take a bit more 'modernising' to really catch imagination - just cosmetics: like a shiny anodising (though i guess this is anti-glare), lose the grooves (but gain a few grammes) And a little change to some of the dated style like the tail box (although it's robust as heck). Electric ought to be easy... with dual side-pods for the batts where the tank is and a simple switch to a motor where the engine sits and gear to the belt..

I have to fly low enough to see it <sigh>
