A learning curve

It didn't hit me well enough that the collet system here and the reverse threaded starter cup work against each other. Dogged the second down too hard and inadvertently loosened the first..so fan started to slip/cant and jam. Sorted now I hope.

I'd also assumed with this heli's provenenace that the head was properly set up right but the pitch is way out and way out between both sides so I'll just go through everything instead of taking short cuts. Also going to have to re-think my original changes to regulator etc to get it tidier.

I'd have liked to get it started just to be sure it runs but here i think it's better to let the threadlock really go off first on the bell nut..just a bit concerend that with the cr*p icleaned from the engine there may be jellied fuel in the carb gumming it but I did get a brief attempt to start before the clutch slipped.

Update

Got the engien fired up and running..obvusly will need tuning but it's another milestone.

I'll also put my hands up at this time and admit that many of the setup issues are due to the unique servo mount/horn system here and the large amount of subtrim necessary to get things squared up.. which I hadn't allowed for.

I'll plod my way through that and also need to rethink my wiring for the third time - trying to get it tidier with my choices of rx and regulator and lipo locations.

This is going to be one superb model :)

Would be nice to see pic's of your Avro does it have the shroud covering the rear part of the frame?looks neat.
So have you sorted out the engine in your trex700?

Sorry to tell you this, but im going to pass on buying that Spartan Quark you offered, have to sort out my van mot,r/tax,insurance,repairs&service so no spare wonga this month..bah
even my crashed Outrage is going to have to wait..:banghead:

hoping you will get the Avro flight ready, will be at old airport thurs if weather holds up.

700 engine running sweet... 600's engine gone back to FL though.. couldn't stop it running hot. Avro doesn't have the rear canopy, sorry. It's engine still needs tuning but at least it ran. I've got the head sorted pretty nearly .. just a potential issue with the phasing pins being shorter than I'd like.. written to Blitz for some ideas on that.

Just need to fiddle with the csm720 and good to go... hope to run the engine a bit more tomorrow.

No prob re quark.

As for pics...you may see it for real thursday...

You need to tighten the crank nut much more than you might think neccessary. I had 3 failed starting attempts, nut and clutch just spun off, before I borrowed a friends 3/8 torque wrench with a good long handle.

As I discovered. I had used an automotive socket set with long handle and dogged it fown... my stupidity was in doing the same to the reverse threaded starter nuts and unknowingly loosening the first one:( Sorted now.

Only remaining issue (apart from getting the engine runnign right) is the washout able to drop below the phase pins when power is off. .. waiitng for som ideas from Blitz. All my link legths are within 1 mm of suggestion and everythign is square at midstick with no interactions. The only answer I can see is a thin mainshaft sleeve below?

I'm sure it is not intended that the washout can drop out of the guides at any time. There must be something missing that is supposed to prevent this.

I'm away from home so can't check. It was built exactly as instructions, but I dont think they covered the phase pins, won't this depend on your mechanical setup and where you want 0 pitch? I agree, it is quite difficult to keep sub-trim to a minimum, but flew perfectly using the additional set-up instructions from the website. I have ordered the 3rd bearing and will fit it shortly, and am about to change the bearings. I have quite a lot of spares I probably wont use, including 3 canopies unpainted. I bought them from someone selling up. If you want a relatively inexpensive unpainted canopy, let me know

I will re-phrase that! With the link lengths as per the manual, and the swash AFR as shown in the stable set-up part of the additional set up instructions, I was able to position the washout guide pins horizontal position so that I achieved the pitch range suggested in the additional instructions. If you have a very early kit there may be parts that have been updated since it's release.

I set mine up with the crank=>swash links as per the included manual. Now you mention it it may be possible to set it up with the swash positioned lower and therefore the phase ring dropped lower. Mine came set-up as with both outer upper mixer arm holes used..so if I've udnderstood it correctly that's a sport+3d setup. I've got a +/-12deg pitch and 9 deg cyclic without binding. Longer washout pins would bind on the swash.

If I set the swash lower and lower the phase ring then a chance that the upper links may not be long enough??

It's almost certainly an earlyish kit with updates...was the realraptors show model and hardly flown.

Defo looking for a blank canopy.. was going to buy one but if you have a spare then we both win - PM me with a price, please. The canopy with it is too nice to use for general hacking about...If you have plenty of spares then shoot me a list of obvious stuff (it'll happen)

I also intend to do that third bearing upgrade.

I have a feeling I'm going to end up taking the engine out again anyway..unless the fuel flow improves with a bit of running. Bags of tank pressure but I was reluctant to dissassemble the cline modded carb.. think I may have to...

.. any reason why it wouldn't run with my spare OS91HZ carb and no reg if needs be?

..not being very bright:

To drop the swash would mean losing the perfect 90deg angle of the A-arm crank..

Mine was a very early kit, I bought it 2nd hand new in box about a year ago. there were a few upgrades, Neal kindly let me know what I had to change. If yours was the Real Raptors show model call Neal, he should be able to tell you. I built mine as stable, from memory +10 -12, I believe the 3D set up has the same pitch range, have you checked the set-up guide which you can download from the Blitz website? If I can get it to work, anyone can!
I'm afraid I'm not very experienced being almost totally self taught, so I follow the mananual implicitly, I'm sure you'll find something is not quite right somewhere. Talk to Neal, he is incredibly helpful.
I'm away untill the 25th, if you're still in the market, I think I have 4 canopies in all, you can have one, unused, for around $25 plus Royal mail, that's pounds, but I'm using a foreign keyboard and can't find the pound sign. There are other bits and pieces I don't need like the satellite Rx kit and carbsmart kit if you're interested.
Check the set-up guide, the only thing not covered is the vertical position of the pins, if you set it at max +10 or 10.5, maybe it wont drop off at -12?

I've got a message in to Neal already. This has the carbsmart fitted and did have a satellite ..but i use futaba anyway..

But when you are back and free please get in touch I'll take a canopy or two off you at that price..spray up a basic one and do a nicer one too perhaps (just rattlecan stuff unless i fight Squeaky for who borrows Ivan's airbrush first:))

I've had to drop the engine again to check out the carb.. it'll be red locktight this time.. (and if necessary a new engine)..this one just doesn't run well unless i got lucky this time..already changed bearings and cleaned it inside and didn't really find anythig wrong in the carb apart from possible cline reg alignment issues..

I should add I've also learned the trial/error/disaster and mate's help method.. I think most of use do...

Never used OS, I really like the consistency of crank pressure. I live in Ireland and buying anything takes a week to 10 days, so I have 2 or more of everything! Im sure I can spare at least one canopy, the box Neal sends them out in are as tough as you get, and they weigh a ton. Dave, who I believe was involved in the design, taught me to set up everything square, so I'd be very surprsed if you can't get it right.

It is a crank pressured OS modded with the cline regulator:)
Let me know when you have the time to deal with canopy(ies) and post and total cost....

Most helis are set up square..and my setup was therefore dictated by the A-arm crank arm and worked out within a mm of the manual's figures

Wayhey, it runs!!

Thats the third time I've had it out..but it runs..sounds like a tractor which is partly the MP pipe and the fact that I couldn't find needle setting for the cline carb variant so it's mucky rich at the moment.

That will partly explain the low frequency airframe shake (I hope). I need to work on the tail rotor and csm720 settings a bit and try again.. today was a quick fire up in my back garden and I wasn't going to take off in small spaces with 35mph gusts swirling around fences and bushes with a big bird. I also feel that the reg diaphragm is too soft/aged so sourcing another will be on my list as well as checking balance on the head and tail and then perhaps fire up without head and tail and feel the boom/TT for vibes...the shake was a milder sort you get before the blades settle out (but they had)... which also make me realise that I haven't checled the tracking - Doh! (I'd have noticed if hovered but too old/wise to crawl around on the grass with a fired up .90 heli solo):)
