  • Which Metal Head?

    Hello all.

I have recently built a mini titan V1 which I really love. However, I am suffereing from a lot of vibration and shaking on spool up and spool down. Also, I can see a lot of vibration through the skids while hovering. I have tried all sorts of things to get rid of this. I have replaced the main and feathering shafts, new dampers, new stiff carbon blades correctly tightened with equal tension (perfectly balanced and tracking true), new main rotor hub, all linkages checked for correct length using digital calipers etc and still it suffers from this problem.
I have therefore decided to go for a all metal head to try and get rid of this once and for all and wondered which one would suit best.
I've seen replacement units made by Sonix and Kasama and wondered if anybody had any experience with these as I am not sure which one to go for.
Or indeed, is there another which would suit even better.

Any comments or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

    Thanks

    Carl

Hi Carl, I too suffered for a long- long time with my Mini Titan with intermittent tracking and vibration problems despite replacing all of the plastic head bits, trying various dampers and a raft of different blades including the fairly expensive T/T wooden blades ones and various makes of C/F many times but without any long term success. After talking to Simmo about the problem, I built up a complete head with brand new T/T upgrade CNC parts but still had problems due to too much slack in the T/T parts. Out of desperation and being determined not to be defeated, I bit the bullet and bought a complete Sonix head from Sportmoto for £70.00 and instantly all my problems disappeared. If money were no object, it would have been a Kasama head at £170.00 but funds were running low after all the money I had already spent going the T/T upgrade route.

Finally now after all the frustration the Mini Titan is at last flying really well, so my advice is to loose the plastic head and fit a Sonix one, you will not regret it.

Hi Carl,I think im right in saying if you take the thust races out,and put them on the outside of the BLade grips, this cures the problem, there is a thead over at the freak all about this, check it out,but im nearly certain that will cure your problem's,your'sMarty.

p/s im away to put my mini titan back in the air.

I tried the trick with the ballraces and cutting 10mm off the blade holder link arm (again on helifreak) to change the delta angle but to no avail in in my case, hence the £70.00 spend on the Sonix head. Worth trying both of these, as it might work for you and could save you some money if it does.

          Hi there,
Great advice gents. I'll firstly try the thrust bearing placement mod and if not successful a call to sportsmoto.
I'll post back with my results.
          Happy flying and thanks again!

              Hello again.

Well, I tried the modification of moving the thrust bearings and test flew it this evening.
Unfortunately, after getting the blades back in perfect track the problem is still present. There appears to be a very slight wobble while looking down on the rotor hub while it is spinning slowly on early spool up/late spool down. I cannot explain or understand this as it is a brand new rotor hub fitted to a brand new hardened main shaft that is perfectly straight (as were the previous 3 before it).
Think I will just have to bite the bullet on this one and go for the sonix.
I'll post with my results once the conversion is complete.
Do I need any other spares at all in order to fit the head or is everything supplied?

              Thanks again
