  • Battery Connectors - Soldering

    Hi

Can anyone recommend a good soldering iron for attaching the gold connectors to LiPo batteries? Does one require special solder at all?

I have bought the 3.5mm connectors for my spare batteries and now want to connect them.

    Pity one cany crimp them...

    Thanks

I bought a cheap one from Wilkes which does the job fine. I do recall seeing electric and gas ones on the Fastlads website for a good price. As for solder, i was recommened to get some with contains flux. Dont know much about it, but it does the job just fine for soldering battery connections.

I use this one from Maplins. If you time it right, it can be bought on sale... I got mine for £9.99!

      And some solder

        Hi Dune...
I am in the same boat and have been reading up on it.....alot of people say get the solder that reads 60/40 with flux its a mixture of lead/tin, altho I read that the 'lead' bit is bad for the environment. I got a 40w soldering iron on Ebay supposed to be made for 'Homebase' about a fiver all in!!

for soldering on to gold connections, its best to rub the gold plate back to under layer with a needle file to make a good contact patch for the solder to stick to. Solder "floats" on the plating and can be picked off unless this is done.

A fine diameter 60/40 solder is best for work round a heli's electrics as its all fairly fine work.

Any soldering iron with a fine / medium tip will be grand. Most start from a fiver up.

It's all about the size of your chopper...

Exactly what I have, it does a grand job and I also got for £9.99
Only thing the tip it comes with is a bit thin so I bought a medium tip.
I also like 60/40 solder that lead free stuff does not like gold plate.
