  • E325 Sport impending doom/melt-down!!!

I was happy as a sandboy a few weeks ago up the field, just a bit of lazy big circuits with my E325 Sport FBL,when all of a sudden the power drops off and carry's on falling. Well I got her on the ground with a bit of a bump, but OK, but she then tipped and buggered the head servos. I was only 3-5 mins in a 9 min flight so I just thought that the battery I was using were old and had hit there sell by date. New day new set of 2200mAh 40c battery’s and 6 mins in flight, bloody hell she did it again!!! This time I got her down OK, when I had a look in the pits, the motor was hot-issh but the speed controller was very very hot! The design of the sport canopy completely encloses the entire front of the heli, with no air holes for cooling, what a sh*te design!!! Its 29degs and it must be like a bloody volcano-type-heat in the front of the poor little heli. My mate has the old design fly-bar heli and that looks like a piece of Swiss cheese it's got so many cooling holes in the front of the canopy as stock!!! (Mad rant over lol,I did cut a neat vent in the front of the canopy but I'm just not a happy camper with this ESC) Just wondering what the best motor & esc set-ups people are using these days cos I run mine in gov mode and the stock ain't great and I'm just not happy with this Esc anymore. Anyviews/opinions would be great.

Gearing & throttle curves can make things hard on an ESC. check your set up against other owners of the same model. EG I fly a 450Trex & on a 13T pinion the motor & ESC always landed hot-but on 14T(extra 200rpm head speed) motor & ESC run real cool. But look at throttle curves also as if your running too low values the ESC has to work overtime also.

Cheers Adrian, all running gear is stock and with a 2000rpm head speed (No throttle curve cos it's in Gov mode as mentioned in post)

Mine was EXACTLY the same, the head would suddenly drop to a very low speed but luckily i had height. I flew 3 packs with the canopy off and it was fine, all I did was cut 2 holes in the bottom of the canopy and its been fine since :-)

Muttley, if you were using the stock Ace esc (BLC-40) that would explain your power cut - that esc is well known for its thermal cut-out cutting out in flight. Did it to me a few times before I worked out it was the esc.
I use the CC ICE 50 esc and Skorpion 2221-8 motor and 13T and I run it governed at 2600. No problems with overheating, motor and esc always land warmish but not hot. At the moment I use the Sport canopy, but for months I've used a Canomod one.
Would certainly say ditch that crap esc, but a lack of cooling holes don't help either, certainly in 29 degrees.

edit: You're doing NINE MINUTES!! Holy crap. I land after 6.

Well guys you've come up trumps again, thought it was cooling on ESC but its good to hear it from someone else, cheers!!! I was thinking of going down the CC ICE 50 esc road cos I've a number of CC ESC and I like their Gov mode and interface, thanks for the pic Ritchieme, I just got a dremel with a sanding barrel on the front of mine to make a hole right in the front for max air flow. Buzzbird, I was doing loops and back flips(no hard 3D) and I use 1300mAH out of the pack in 5.57 mins. If I just laze around I get about 10.30mins off a Turigyn 2200mAH 40c pack, must be using the termals lol

I might have to try mine at 2000, the extra 600rpm might explain why I've never got near 10mins on any of my packs, even when new. Would've thought you'd get nodding at such a low hs.
Anyway, hope the holes sort your cooling out.

One of my fav bits of flying is to power across the strip at ramming speed and pull hard up and listen to the blade howl, not had a prob with nodding, yet lol. Will see how fast the little beasty will go next time I'm up the strip and watch for nodding.

Are you using stock settings on the GT5.1

I'm only at the lazy 8 stage myself but do fly high and very fast, I'm really tempted to do a barrel roll or loop, I'm told i need to be at mid stick zero pitch to do a barrel roll? Any tips anyone?

Ideally to do most aerobatics you should be in idle up with a proper -+ pitch curve Id say -11 to +11 with 0 in the centre would be good for you

To the OP. Ive always found that if ou are throttling back a motor the esc will get really hot. You need to have the motor singing at 80% and above.
For example my mates Trex 500 his esc and motor will get quite warm with his flying. Lazy 8's and hovering. I flew it and beat the crap out of it the best I could (not that much really LOL) and the motor and esc were stone cold after 6 mins of 3d
Some say my left nipple is the shape of a Raptor canopy.......... And that for fun I chase sheep in wellies 3 sizes too big. All I know is I am 3D Clod

Yep, might be a very small tweek but that's down to the fact I'm now using Align head servo's. As far as pitch goes it's about 10+- degs and idle up 1 with 2000rpm in gov mode, this model will loop very easy and is just a quick trip to back flips after that, and a great model to learn on if you don't have a blade 130x (they bounce better lol). I hated relearning stick position but its well worth setting it up for mid stick 0 degs, makes aeros much easier IMo
