  • Raptor E550 motor and ESC options

I have just bought a Raptor E550 kit and was wondering what the best motor and esc options are and if there is any alternatives to the stock items?

    Thanks,
    Dan.

I see the stock motor is 1150Kv. If the Ace motor is a 40mm design then you could look at using the Scorpion 4020-1100, 4025-1100 or the the Quantum 4120-1200. As for ESC on a budget there is HobbyWing Platinum 100A and YEP100A. Next comes the YGE 90 or 100LV and top of the shop Kontronik 100LV. I should think the BEC in the newer YGEs will be good as is the one in the Kontronik. I don't know and it could depend on the servos and whatnot that you choose as to whether you might need an external bec with the HobbyWing and YEP.

I had an raptor E550 for a while, if your stock motor is in good condition then i'd just stick with that, the standard ESC however is a little on the small side IIRC 70 amp and it didn't seem very good to me (might just be me though) - So if you want to upgrade add some headroom to the ESC.

I did try a Turnigy Typhoon motor as an upgrade but soon switched back as the rpms were way too high - I'm sure the written spec wasn't what the motor was doing at all.

Scorpion are a firm favorite for upgrades but very expensive.

        Thanks for the info
I have ordered the kit only and presume it wouldn't come with motor and esc for £189 as it didn't say I might be surprised when it turns up!
The idea is to use the servos and Rx from my newly written off Titan as I'm a bit cheesed off with nitro!

        Thanks

I have a TT550 stock all up, out the box and the motor etc seems very good for the price, (under £400)
Bargin if you get the motor, or though I doubt it, All your Titan bits will fit perfectly, except the tail belt! Oh, and swash.

It depends as well on what kind of performance you're looking for out of it. The Scorpions mentioned already are certainly up to the job as long as the ESC and LiPos are. If you wanted max performance I would think you could go 12s using an Align 600MX / 510 and something like the Hobbywing 70HV but I'm not sure exactly what gearing choices you have, what headspeed the original motor setup is trying to achieve etc. (With the HW ESC you'd need a separate BEC as well but it's a very inexpensive ESC for a 12s setup).

On low C rated Lipos (6s) it will have more power than a Raptor 30, perhaps more than a 50 running a 50Hyper, but it probably won't be ballistic on 6s unless you get some high C rated packs. On 12s it can be a rocket even with cheap packs.

I'm going to use it as a sedate flyer and a direct replacement for my Titan
I will be running 6s 5000mah 60c Turnigy packs and a 9 tooth pinion for a lower headspeed, so just looking for a good match for the standard kit.
I have had my 500 professionally set up now, Wow! what a difference it fly's like its on rails!
So not expecting the Raptor to come close in terms of performance and will keep the EFL PRO for the 12s setup.

              Thanks,
              Dan.

A stock Align BL600MX 1220KV is only 70kv more than the stock TT motor and theres usually plenty of align motors floating about on the for sale or bmfa classifieds..

For an ESC - cheap end I'd recommend the hobby king "YEP100" esc - very very good esc for the money... or if you want to spend more, theres endless top end ones to choose from.

I had mine setup as a 6S 5000 sedate flyer - was very nice on this setup - 12S if you want go mental with it but you have your 600 for that ;-)

Ah, I totally forgot you have an EFL pro! No prob doing the sedate flyer. I had an Outrage 550 and then a Fusion on 6s and I was using the Turnigy 30-40C packs so that was probably the limiting factor. The plus side was the flight times were really good, I was getting 7 minutes with over 30% left. But I didn't continue to see how far I could go with it because I got distracted with other helis and then swapped the Fusion for something else.

                    Excellent,
So is it better to go for the 100 AMP than the 80? and do you think the Align would be ok and not too powerful?

                    Thanks,

Just a thought, I have a Phoenixtech 1200kv motor, it's the one that was sold with the Flasher 600. There's a video of a Flasher 600 with this motor. You're welcome to try it if you want.

If you are just doing sedate flying you could get away with an 80 amp esc - however if your looking at buying one of hobby kings "Yep" escs - theres such little difference in price between the two units you may as well go for the larger esc - just that bit more amperage headroom and usually means bigger heat sink too.

Yeah I was impressed with mine - I thought if you were buying it from a model shop they could easily get away with charging way more with a little re branding.

Quality of it & the soldering was impressive for the money and it works well too... Its supposed to be an exact clone of the YGE Controller which are highly regarded.

Anyway Once you've got it setup post some pics if you can ;-)
