  • 138mph Rappy 55!!

I know it sounds impossible but that’s the highest speed a friends GPS speed tracker showed, when it was strapped to the heli,
I was flying side on to the wind at full pitch/throttle (governor off) turned with the wind and off it went like a bat out of hell, did it about 10 times at one point with a strong gust it went away so fast it made my knees tremble and it was a little dot in the distance
With the governor on it only reached 117mph.

The max I could get with my Synergy N5 was 80mph but that for me was to twitchy in the high winds to keep it in FF flight. Plus the governor was on, I didn’t really want to take it off as I could see it would have been a real hand full.
Both helis have os55s and the Rappy engine was revving its nuts off, don’t know what the head speed was but it was shifting.
The wind can be fun sometimes.

Jeez, my fun jet at 145 was brisk, but that's crazy for a heli! Was it an X50 or an older model?

I'd suspect that the gps glitched it's position or timing We have a calibrated speed gun at ARA now, and even with a stiff breeze we couldn't get more than 115mph out of my 700e today!

          Hi

Yep I suspect Jamies right, I use a GPS all the time when paragliding, they are the slowest aircraft there is but I do get spikes of very high speed from time to time, it's just the GPS loosing signal for a second or two.

          Cheers
          Bob

i think all these high speed runs on helis need to be on the same day, the same gun ,with the same person operating it and the same flying site
to get the readings to mean anything
as differing guns, operators weather conditions can alter the reading by a large margin

I suspect GPS glitch, I was using one to navigate some off road trails once and I noticed it said my max speed had been 72mph on a push bike. I'm just not that fast!!

We did test the GPS at slower speeds and it was good but as you've all said it could have glitched to give the highest reading
but after doing 20 or more runs with the wind gusting to about 20mph and dropping to about 10mph at its lowest,
the Titan still gave the fastest reading and I feel sure the 117mph was'nt far off the true speed.
It did make flying in strong winds interesting and I know what I'll be doing next time its windy
Oh and if I reach close to 138 next time,, I won't care what you say

                        Thats ok then,
the only thing is it may run out of fuel before it gets there,,,
Guess I could strap a 90 tank to it, but it will slow it down so you will have to alow for that
