  • X50 exhaust Q

Just come to part where I fit the X50 exhaust - Redline Hi Flow 3D.
The manual shows bolts going through engine casting (lock washers under bolt head)
Screwed through gasket into the female thread in the exhaust flange.
It does not show locknuts fitted.
    Should they be fitted?
If so how did you achieve this, curve of exhaust tube prevents nut spinner or socket being used.
Maybe fact that lock washers used and flange is threaded means it does not need the lock nuts
Some people will always find fault - if you find a typo, consider it put there for you.

You should be fine without as the exhaust manifold has threaded mounts.
If you want to fit nuts on the outside, you might need to file a little of the outside of the manifold away to let the lock nuts sit flush and properly tighten up.
    Cheers,
    Rob

I haven't got anything to do the things up with :-)
Guess I need to find a suitable open ended spanner .... Can't bring myself to use pliers.

        Yes, a spanner, usually 7mm I think?

Or 5.5mm maybe for M3 nuts?

            Quite possibly
I'm too used to working on 90 size models lately... that's my excuse anyway
            LOL
            Cheers,

It's 5.5 for sure ... as nuts fit nut spinner ......... have to try & find a 5.5mm open end spanner somewhere.

Had mine up hovering yesterday, even though i have the spring washers fitted and lock thread the exhaust fell off mid flight. fitted locknuts on the other end, bit tight to get em in though.

Shouldnt use thread lock mate.. the heat from the engine melts it and causes it to act like a lubricant..

You best bet is to use aeronuts.. crank down hard and let the engine warm up.. then tighten it again

I made that mistake when I first started ... heres the bolts you need Aerotight Self Locking Nuts

Presuming you don't have any aeronuts yet and want to go flying, use a smear of 5 minute epoxy over the mating faces and on the end of the bolt thread, and use a nyloc bolt. It will hold fine for a day or two's flying, in fact it's all I ever do on all my helis and the exhausts stay put permanently. If it doesn't then you've got a vibration problem somewhere.
