  • Raptor 90 3D stock plastic canopy clear coat painting ??

    Hi all,
Just finished my New Raptor 3D sworn it's stock plastic canopy and applied blue adhesives. Looks very nice and what I'd like to do to protect the canopy and the adhesives too would be to spray the canopy with a clear coat (transparent) paint. In this way I'll avoid adhesives come off giving also some plastic protection from oil and fuel drops.
Problem is I'm not very keen on this particular material and I'm not sure which could be the good clear paint to use, not to ruin plastic and adhesives too.
Any one of you can help me in this choice ?
    Any suggestion is highly appreciated,
    Thank you,
    Denis

It is pretty difficult to paint the stock plastic canopies. This has to do with the composition of the plastic. The decals supplied are fuel proofed, but if they start to peel off, you will struggle to get them to stick back on.

I have painted plastic canopies before and you need to use an etching primer. I used one made by Upol for automotive applications. Unfortunately this is a grey primer, so you would have to spray white on before applying the decals and then the clearcoat.

I have not found a clear paint that can be applied directly to the plastic.

Hi, thank you for the suggestion.

In other words, to let me understand :
in my case that I already have my new plastic canopy + stock decals perfectly applied, what I should do is applying the primer on the white exposed plastic parts, then spray the clear cote all over the canopy, is that correct ?

Any risk of cracks after the paint has set and considering the flexibility of the plastic material ?

Hi mate I'm a painter plastic always needs a plastic primer which is clear so paint or clearcoat will adhere to it so mask up your decals just in case a reaction occurs while applying the primer then remove the masking before u clearcoat it bear in mind the clearcoat normally needs to be applied within 30 mins of primer being applied!!
