  • Raptor 60 as first IC Heli

    Hi,

Currently flying a blade 400 3d, and was going to move up and purchase an IC bird next.

Had my heart set on a Raptor 50 Titan, went to my local model shop and they have a special offer on a Brand new Raptor 60 Kit with pro 70 engine for £274.99.

This is over £100 cheaper than the 50 with engine, Would the 60 at this price be a better choice?

All help appreciated as I know they only have 6 left at this price and don't want to miss out.

I got a Raptor 60 as my 1st IC heli, paid £600 quid for it of ebay, cost me about another £3-4 hundred to get it in the air, its a great machine to start out with, you will love it, mine is a 90 now, the only original parts are the paddles and the servo tray, buying that 60 of ebay was the best money I have ever wasted.

the rappy 60 is a fine heli and is stable and suited to a begginer
but you must accept that the parts cost is greater with a bigger heli
and you must understand that it is a lot bigger to fly that a 50 when learning and you may brick yourself if it gets to near and a little out of control

and get it set up correctly and checked by somebody that can fly it

set up right a bigger heli is better to learn on as its more stable than a small heli
but be prepair for the ££'s when things go wrong

Cheers for info, you have put my mind at rest. The guys at the shop did warn me spares would be a bit more.

I have now reserved a raptor 60 online and will collect from Kings Lynn Model Shop tomorrow morning.

What sort of gyro and servo's for this size heli would you recommend?

No 3d, just basic flying around. Does not have to be the cheapest but best cost/value for what I need.

        Thanks

I am just outfitting a Raptor 90 (I am taking ages because I'm terribly lazy) and I have installed a set of Ace RC (Thundertiger) DS1015 servos on the swash. But it was really a 50/50 decision between those and the Align 610s.

As far as value for money I think most would agree the Align 610s. You can spend a lot more on servos for the high-end JRs and Futabas but much lower spec servos have been used with good success for a long time.

I am still using S9252s in a couple helis and they are only rated at 6.6kg/cm of torque vs something like 9kg for the Aligns.

Similarly with gyros there are a lot that will do the job and recently there have been some good deals on 2nd hand Spartans and CSM 720s etc.

the choice of servo is up to you and your budget
i'm not an align fan but many pilots like the align 600 series servo's but i'd put a higher torque servo on the pitch, also look at the hitec servo' they have a good spec at a lower cost to the futaba/jr servo's
the best gyro you can afford, if your looking at the futaba 401 have a look at the spartan, they are a newer gyro with better performance and around the same price
also look at the csm 720 we hear good reports of them
a high speed tail servo is a must, futaba 9254, jr 8900

just to expand on the servo's
this is the align servo i was on about the 610, i don't know the spec of them

                and the other one is
i have test flown for another club member a few years ago a raptor 90 with std servos
no bull it was fitted with futaba 148's
it flew and they didn't fail on the heli
granted all it ever did was hover
and only went into a curcuit when i flew it
and the gyro was a csm180 for this type of heli

they will fly on low spec gear but your better off buying the best spec you can afford so you don't need to replace them as your skills advance

20kg! holy cow! I think the Ace RC 1015s are something like 14kg and I thought that was OTT They're a bit pricey new though, I got mine 2nd hand so decided to try them out.

But yeah, on the Raptor with one servo per function the pitch servo does have a bit tougher job.
