  • Raptor tail rotor pin..

I spent a few mins looking over my raptor this morning and the first thing I looked at was the tail. When I looked down the spindle from the non-blade side I could see a small dia steel pin through the middle of the red plastic pulley inside the casing.

Is this the troublesome pin in question?

Also the spindle looks like it's threaded from the side I was looking down so should there be a grub screw in there or something securing the pin in the spindle or are there grub screws in the pulley holding the pin in place ??

as this is a known issue I want to get it right before I fly it.

    cheers

yes that thread should have a grub screw in it
you can glue the pin in or put some heat shrink over it if you're worried about it coming out
my raptor 60 was built in 2002 and the pin has never moved (the 60 does have a difference as its torque tube drive but the gear is held in place with the same method)
i think it was more of a build error by some than a major problem/fault

Take the pin out and grind a small flat in the centre this will give the grub screw a nice surface to bite into, as said before plenty of loctite

Finally got the tail off the raptor tonight and it was a good job I did check it...

the only thing holding the pin in was the fact it was rubbing on the inside of the casing so it was a disaster waiting to happen..

I did take a few piccies but between my camera and uploading them they got lost suffice to say the inside of the casing was a bit of a mess but it cleaned up OK and both bearings seemed to be fine so I have re-built it with a new grubscrew and a good dollop of loctite. Definately one to keep an eye on though....

            cheers

Mine did the same too, it split the tail casing, you have probably seen my thread!
Re The grub screw, it's a tiny screw and therefore impossible to reach down onto the pin that goes through the pulley, therefore I don't see the point of it, am I missing something?

You can buy grub screws of the right thread that are about an inch long, makes it easier to check & replace especially if you round the head.

It's the one, the one grub screw I can see in the tail section, and it goes in the tail spindle shaft - Steve Yeah but the one that comes with the new pulley - what is the point of it ! ? I guess it's how it was designed too so it's as supplied by TT, just don't see the point of it!

Just use a m3 cap screw then.

Just finished putting mine back together, I decided to put a dob of CA glue either end of the pin, and looking through my packet of TT screws, I found a longer grub screw, so will stick that in! Hope to test later, maybe tomorrow.....

I see what it does, the small orginal supplied grub screw is fine, I tried the slighlty longer one, and it bites tight but sticks out a bit, put the small one in, fits nicely and bites on the pin enough to turn the tail blades when tightening, removed put some blue locktite on and refitted.
