Stripped another main gear today.

I have an OS55, using supplied engine mount shims and if I align the clutch stack up properly it results in a loose(ish) gear mesh (can move the gear 0.5mm to 0.7mm). If I get the mesh tighter, the clutch bell is noticeably slanted/misaligned

Now i know people say rock the engine back and forth to get a better alignment, but when you tighten the bolts, the misalignment reappears.

Really at the end of my tether on this one, and if i strip the next set of gears that's in the post, someone will get a bargain N5 and OS55.

Or another thought.. what about elongating the engine frame mount holes to give you more grace when tightening down.. just saves the block being pulled back into the hole and mis-aligning it? Or if nothing works.. you cant beat a trusty Align

Always here to help Daz, lets see if we can get this sorted for you!

What i would be tempted to do is loosen the clutch stack bolts and also the bolts which attach the engine mounts to the frame but don't loosen the bolts which secure the engine to the mounts. Then cut a strip of paper about 10mm wide and however long you wish and feed it inbeteen the pinion and main gear, then push the clutch stack towards the main gear so that its tight and then tighten up all the bolts. You should have a tight mesh at the point. Now you can remove the paper or leave it in place, i usually leave it in place so that it keeps everything tight while i align the engine and start shaft. What you need to do here is grab the engine and with the bolts loose in the mounts it should have a slight amount of movement so that you can spin the clutch stack for a smooth operation and once you find the smooth spot snug up a couple of the bolts holding the mounts to the frames to hold the engine in place. If you've no already done it, remove the slip of paper and this should give you a perfect alignment and also a perfect gear meash.

You can if you wish, remove the engine from the mounts altogether to simplfy the alignment process and do it in stages.

You also mention you are using the OS55 and are using the supplied engine shims so this method should give you a perfect alignment usually!

I have attached a picture to show you how i do mine.

Mine runs best without the shims. Much closer mesh but still a little back lash. Ade999 runs his like this too. No stripped gears here ;-)

If your gear mesh is a little loose, just remove the shims? That will tighten it up enough. I only ever stripped one gear on mine, and that was because I hadn't tightened ANY of the clutch stack bolts after changing an engine bearing!

Edit: I never used the shims on mine with an os55

Many thanks for your responses everyone. I took the shims out and the meshing is far better, i'll roll with this and see how we do.
