Balancing fan hub

Hi all, this is probably teaching you to suck eggs but be sure to balance your fan hubs. I didn't until tonight and this is what I found:-

I've taken small shavings from the opposite side of the fan - didn't need to take too much material off, thankfully. Now it balances perfectly

I love it, i've even put the N5's head with blades on to see how the whole head balances... bit anal i know

That is what I use, and found my 700 one way out.

Likewise, assemble the complete head on a main shaft and that fits on, and use the suppled spindle for a tail assembly.

I used to have one of those balancers when I had my Extreme and other older heli's - tbh now I take it as a matter of fact that with today's milling these should be spot on - no excuses.

Maybe its time to re-invest in some basics....

I'll do it when it crashes! I managed to round the mainshaft collar bolt so it aint coming off unless it really needs to!!

Generally it's not the aluminum turned parts that are out of balance, its the assemblies once they are all together. Plastic parts can have air pockets and density changes throughout the part. Also on the plastic fan, if the bolt holes are not tight on the OD of the 4 mounting bolts, the fan can be misaligned causing an imbalance. Maybe change the title of the video to "N5 Engine Fan Assembly Balancing" for better accuracy. You could do the same thing with the clutch bell assembly and find that since the glued in liner, magnet, and pinion have been added that some balancing may be needed. Anything spinning this fast should be evaluated. (Engine 18,000+ / Tail Rotor +/-10,000)
